A $250 million estate in Bel Air could become the most expensive home in America for the third time.
The most expensive home for sale in the U.S. Bel-Air Casa Encantada will cost $250 million, The Wall Street Journal reports. It will be the most expensive home in the country.
More than twenty years ago in 2000, this luxury villa was sold to current owners Gary and Karen Winnick for $94 million dollars. The previous owner was billionaire David Murdoch, who bought the estate for $12.4 million in 1980. Both deals were record highs for private home values in America. We hope history repeats itself this time.
This Georgian-style mansion was built in the 1930s for widow Hilda Boldt Weber. In 1948, she put the property up for sale and two years later it was purchased by hotel owner Conrad Hilton for only $225,000. While Conrad Hilton has lived at Casa Encantada for more than 30 years, the house has remained virtually unchanged. It wasn't until Winnicki purchased it that a lengthy renovation began that took two and a half years to complete. Interior designer and architect Peter Marino oversaw the project.
This delightful 40,000 square foot mansion houses 60 rooms, including a wine cellar, movie room and bar. The eight-acre property also features a tennis court, basketball court, carp pond and numerous gardens. Winnicki estimates the repair costs at several tens of millions of dollars. "These estates only come up every few decades, and when they disappear, they disappear," says Kurt Rappaport of Westside Estate Agency, who owns the list along with Drew Fenton of Carolwood Estates. Currently, the most expensive home ever sold in the United States is a $238 million penthouse in New York City purchased by hedge fund manager Ken Griffen. Let's see if whoever buys Casa Encantada can break this record.
