Boarding up: an empty hotel in Portugal becomes a tourist attraction

PORTUGALIA (3TV/CBS 5) - Abandoned hotels are considered a center of attraction for visitors throughout Arizona, from Bisbee to Jerome. The same can be said in other parts of the world where tourists are attracted by the mysteries and legends surrounding historic or abandoned sites. One of the most famous places is on the island of São Miguel, which is part of the Azores off the coast of Portugal.
The old Monte Palace Hotel
was the most prestigious luxury hotel in Portugal in the 1980s. It closed after only two years! Then the developers faced two problems. First, not enough tourists heard of the Azores in the 1980s. Second, the views from the suites were too often obscured by fog.
The fog adds mystery and an eerie feeling as you walk through the abandoned grounds. All windows are broken or deleted. The hotel has completely lost its appeal due to the harsh conditions of the island.
From the rooftop, you can see some of the best hiking trails in the Azores, around the volcanic lakes, beaches and coastline. São Miguel is also known for its beautiful waterfalls, hot springs (thanks to volcanic activity below), as well as vineyards and even a tea plantation.
The best time to visit the Azores
Depends on your tolerance for crowds and unpredictable weather conditions, but the off-season months of May and September are usually ideal. San Miguel is a small island that is easy to explore and visit as a tourist. Ponta Delgada Airport is efficiently run, and it is definitely a place where I recommend renting a car to travel to all the natural wonders on your schedule.
