Prabowo has been elected president, but competitors from PDI-P remain the largest party in Indonesia.
After the general election on Feb. 14.Indonesiaheld general elections to decide who will be its next president as well as the composition of its parliament. On March 20, Indonesia's Election Commission KPU released the results for the legislative and presidential elections, according to the Jakarta Post and Kompas.
PDI-P, led by former President Megawati Sukornaputri and technically the party of current President Joko Widodo, won a majority of seats in the House of Representatives, Indonesia's lower house of parliament. It won 16.72 percent of the popular vote and 110 seats. PDI-P is also the party of presidential candidate Ganjar Pronovo, who received the fewest votes in the presidential election. PDI-P was close to Golkar, the traditional party of Indonesian strongman Suharto. It received 15.29 percent of the popular vote with 102 seats. President Prebowo Subianto's winning party, Gerindra, received 13.22 percent of the popular vote with 86 seats. The parties supporting the second presidential candidate Anis Baswedan, the Party of National Awakening (PKB), the NASDAM Party and the Justice Party (PKS), came fourth, fifth and sixth respectively.
The result is significant for several reasons. In the run-up to the 2024 presidential election, PDI-P was the only party that did not need a coalition agreement to nominate a candidate because it had more than 20 percent of the seats in the House of Representatives.
After the 2019 presidential election, various parties in the House of Representatives have come together to give Jokowi a huge government coalition. His son and vice president-elect Gibran Rakabuming Raka, quoted by the Jakarta Globe, said he and Prebovo would approach other parties to form a similarly large coalition. Speaking on March 21, Gibran said one party outside Prebovo's coalition has already approached. He also said ties between him and members of his former PDI-P party were not completely severed, as several members congratulated him on his victory.
Prebowo's coalition consists of his own political party Gerindra, Golkar, the National Mandate Party and former President Susilo Bangbang Yudhoyono's party, the Democratic Party. Prebovo is expected to be inaugurated in October 2024. Before then, he is likely to face legal challenges to his election due to allegations that he was supported by the Jokowi government. Reuters reports that both Anis and Ganjar plan to file complaints with the constitutional court, saying that “a leadership born out of a tainted process, with deviations, fraud, will lead to a regime with unjust politicians.” The Diplomatic article notes that the PDI-P also intends to challenge the result. This may raise doubts about the possibility of returning to power in the near future. However, it should be remembered that in 2019, Prebowo's supporters took to the streets to protest the result, but he eventually became defense minister, possibly paving the way for his election victory in 2024.
