The government will tighten controls on Airbnb-like housing growth.

The French National Assembly on Tuesday will consider a proposed transpartisan law aimed at significantly tightening rules on platforms.
Airbnb has made a major acquisition. On Monday, November 20, the San Francisco-based company announced the hiring of Ron Klein as General Counsel. U.S. President Joe Biden's former right-hand man in the White House has become a valuable backup during a difficult period for the group.
After the market for apartments for tourists flourished, now cities and governments around the world are looking to curb platforms like Airbnb, accusing them of contributing to a housing shortage, costing rental prices and real estate.
In early September, New York City banned the rental of apartments for less than thirty days, except under very strict conditions. In October, the Italian city of Florence decided to ban new short-term rentals in the historic center, offering tax breaks to apartment owners if they agree to rent them out on long-term leases. The Canadian government, for its part, announced a series of measures on Tuesday, Nov. 21, to combat the housing crisis.

In France, one of the U.S. giant's main markets, a transpartisan law proposal is hitting the national assembly at the end of November that proposes to significantly tighten rules on the platforms. The bill, aimed at "redressing imbalances in the hiring market in the stressed area," will be considered by the economic affairs committee of the national assembly on Tuesday, Nov. 28. The bill, which was introduced in April, is gradually getting better thanks to "harmonized" amendments, notes Inasi Echaniz.
The bill first proposes to overhaul the taxation of furnished rentals, focusing on the tax breaks enjoyed by Airbnb apartment owners. Tenants of classified tourist accommodations do have a fixed preferential abatement of 71% of the rent received, compared to 50% for regular rental accommodations and only 30% for vacant rental accommodations. "Citizens have a sense of great tax injustice and there are expectations," observes Annaique Le Maire.
