Offered for sale an opera house designer's dream on realestate.com.au
Architect Jorn Utzon, creator of the Sydney Opera House, dreamed of building his home on the coast. He bought a plot of land in Bayview in 1962 for 4,145 pounds, with the intention of building a pavilion-style family estate. However, the local authorities rejected his proposals. At the time Utzon and his wife Lees and three children lived in a rented house in Alexandra Cres Street overlooking Lyon Island.
After Utzon left the Opera House Project in 1966 over a disagreement with the state government over cost overruns, he closed his studio in a boat shed on Palm Beach and did not return to Australia for a long time until his death in 2008.
