The battle for the chairmanship of the committees of the Chamber of Deputies continues.
The major parties have been invited to a meeting this week to resolve their differences over the leadership of various House committees, said Pheu Thai Party member Wisut Chainarun.
Of the 35 committees of the apex house, several parties are vying for the chairmanship of six committees. The meeting will bring together parties vying for the same positions to find common ground.
It is particularly important for the Move Forward party to chair 11 committees. As the largest party with 151 MPs, the MFP was entitled to chair 11 committees.
However, following the resignation of one of its MPs, prompted by the revelation of information about his criminal past while in Rayong, a by-election will be held on September 10 and the party will lose one representative.
However, the party is confident it can retain its representation in Rayong and is demanding the right to chair 11 committees. According to Visuth, the meeting will be held this week before the by-election.
He also said that the committees of the House play an important role in controlling the government and hence there is a need for compromise between the parties.
