Roger Federer: the real estate portfolio of the tennis champion.
Roger Federer has plenty of options when it comes to homes. In September 2022, the great tennis player announced his decision to retire after winning 20 Grand Slam singles titles: "I am 41 years old. I have played over 1,500 matches in 24 years," Federer said in an audio clip posted on social media. "Tennis has been more generous to me than I could have ever imagined, and now I realize that it’s time to end my professional career." Roger Federer's last match took place in London on September 23, 2022, where he played against Frances Tiafoe and Jack Sock, partnering with his eternal rival Rafael Nadal, and lost.
Roger Federer and his homes in Switzerland
Roger Federer, known for his family-oriented nature, hails from the Swiss city of Basel, so it's no surprise that he has had and still has several homes in this charming country. He has also spent a lot of time on the tennis courts in Dubai, where it is said that he has owned a house since 2006. Below, we have gathered some of Federer’s most beautiful homes over the years.
2008 year
One of the first homes that Roger Federer purchased after moving from Basel was an apartment in Bäch, Switzerland, on the southern shore of Lake Zurich. Little is known about this lakeside residence, including its price and size. According to reports, the tennis player sold the apartment in February 2014.
In 2008, Federer also purchased property in the Swiss village of Valbella, at the Lenzerheide-Valbella resort, a popular tourist destination. It is unknown how much he paid for this modern ski chalet; however, according to some reports, he demolished the existing structure and built his own. The chalet, in traditional Swiss style, features open spaces, wooden finishes, and wall paneling for a cozy chalet atmosphere. Of course, there is a tennis court on the premises.
"One of my goals after retiring is to spend time exploring mountain biking trails," he said in an interview with the New York Times in 2021. "Mountain biking has become very popular in Switzerland because we want to make the mountain regions a year-round tourist destination." And it seems that he still owns this house and, reportedly, also owns the adjacent chalet where his parents live, connected to the first by an underground tunnel.
2011 year
Federer paid around 30 million dollars for a 5,800 square meter plot of land with a panoramic view of Lake Zurich, located in the affluent lakeside community of Herrliberg, Switzerland.
2014 year
Then Federer decided to build a house for his family in Wollerau, Switzerland, close to his first apartment in Bäch. He paid $7.3 million for this custom-designed three-story house, which mainly consists of fully transparent windows providing an unparalleled panoramic view of the lake. Interior images show massive fireplaces on all three floors, as well as wide wooden terraces on each level. The pool, spa, and gym are noteworthy features, and there is also underground parking where Federer undoubtedly parks his valuable Mercedes-Benz cars.
At the gala concert celebrating the 250th anniversary of the Moët & Chandon brand in 2012, Federer stated in an interview with Architectural Digest that his dream home is "very modern and cozy." He added that he would like to work with the architectural firm Herzog & de Meuron because "they are from Basel, my hometown, and I love their work." It is unknown whether he ultimately collaborated with this firm for his home in Wollerau, but it is definitely a dreamlike place.
Regarding dream homes, Federer also spent $23.5 million on a penthouse apartment in the exclusive Le Reve skyscraper (which means "Dream" in French) in Dubai. The apartment has five bedrooms, each with its own bathroom, and the master bedroom even features a spacious walk-in closet and dressing room. Images of the penthouse showcase luxurious marble floors, paneled ceilings, and a stunning view of the marina filled with million-dollar yachts. Among the numerous amenities available, Federer can order a helicopter or private jet at the push of a button.
2018 year
Federer's next house is still under construction, but judging by his other properties, it will be just as luxurious and grand. In 2018, he purchased a 16,000 square meter plot of land in Rapperswil-Jona, Switzerland, a town at the northern end of Lake Zurich. It is unknown how much he paid for this significant plot, but reports suggest that the finished house could be worth over 50 million dollars. The plans for the residence include a school classroom, an indoor sports court, and, of course, a tennis court.
