The Portuguese government has decided to extend the special citizenship regime for descendants of Sephardic Jews until the end of 2024. It was previously announced that this regime would be abolished on December 31 of this year.

However, during discussions in Parliament, the parties decided to set a new deadline, which could be six months or even one year. This means that the special regime may continue until the end of 2024.
The new rule also requires the possession of inherited property or shares in companies, as well as proof of regular trips to Portugal. This change aims to tighten the requirements for obtaining citizenship and prevent abuses.
