Fire in Greece, New York

The victim of an early morning fire that occurred on Sunday was 75-year-old Barbara Gilday along with her dog. The fire broke out around 8:17 AM in a house on Crosby Lane. Emergency services gathered on the street, including police from Gris, firefighters from North Gris, and medics from Monroe County. When they arrived, they encountered heavy smoke and flames, finding the woman and her pet on the second floor.

On April 14, 2024, the police in Gris responded to a fire call at 465 Crosby Lane. Upon arrival, they saw smoke and flames inside the building. Patrol officers, along with neighbors, attempted to enter the house, but the heat and fire were too intense. Within a few minutes, firefighters from North Gris, providing support, noted that the situation was critical.

  • The neighbors said they woke up to the sound of sirens.
  • Kit Osir, who lives across the street, reported that he was sleeping when he heard the approaching sound of fire trucks.
  • He noted that he didn't see the flames, but he smelled smoke.

“I was in bed, and my dogs were restless.

I heard a lot of sirens. She was on oxygen support and had difficulty moving, so I don’t know if that affected the situation or if she couldn’t get out. I didn’t see any fire, just smoke coming from the roof. It’s really a sad situation,” he shared.

Kevin BattagliaThe chief of the North Griss Fire Department stated that "we responded to the call at Ridge Road and Lakeshore in the first phase, and 25 firefighters arrived on the scene within seven minutes." He believes this is a tragedy and hopes that people will remember this situation and take steps to protect their homes and families.

“It’s obvious that we have fire extinguishers and smoke detectors. I don’t know if she had them. I assume she probably did. I just heard that she had mobility issues, and maybe that’s somehow related to the incident.”

Authorities reported that the fire was extinguished within ten minutes, however, the cause of the incident remains under investigation.
