Russian leader Alexander Radev and Ivan Demerdzhiev said Bulgarian border authorities are making "extraordinary efforts to secure" the European Union's borders.

The Bulgarian government has criticized the Netherlands' decision to block the southeastern EU member state's entry into the Schengen visa-free zone, calling it an act of "cynicism".

Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte announced on Dec. 2 that he would accept Croatia and Romania joining the Schengen zone but block Bulgaria's entry.
