The historic Burnbank Estate, located at 70-72 Beaumont Rd, in Berwick, formerly owned by Australia's first Olympic champion and athlete Edwin Fleck, is for sale. This historic heritage-listed property offers seven bedrooms with ornate ceilings, hand-crafted glass windows and wide verandas.
The first Olympic GamesFleck was born in London in 1873 and moved to Australia with his parents at a young age. He attended Melbourne Grammar School from 1886 to 1892. Fleck was the only Australian athlete at the first modern Olympic Games in Athens, Greece, in 1896. He made a significant contribution by winning the 800' races'meters and 1500 meters. Fleck became popular with his rivals and earned the nickname 'The Lion of Athens'.
The Burnbank Estate
Some time later, after returning home, he purchased the Burnbank Estate, built around 1854, and organized the breeding of Friesian cows. Today, the 1.09-hectare Burnbank Estate has a garden pool, four sitting areas, six bathrooms, a guest house, a two-car garage and a three-phase power barn. Fleck passed away at the age of 61 following surgery.
