Modern art: AI and humans on uncharted reefs of music and multimedia space

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has democratized creativity, becoming a fertile ground for the emergence of new artistic movements, say technical experts on the eve of the GITEX GLOBAL Ai Everything conference in Dubai, UAE. AI has redrawn the boundaries of multimedia and art in less than a year, shaking the foundations of human activity and challenging all notions of what is possible in the new era of AI. However, concerns that its apparent super-intelligence may replace all concepts of human creativity are exaggerated, and for artists, creative individuals, and musicians worldwide, AI has become more of a tool for democratizing creativity, serving as fertile ground for the emergence of new artistic movements, according to technical experts.

AI in music

Arash Darroudi, Executive Vice President and General Counsel of Fender Guitars, believes that AI can replicate, create, and innovate new sounds from previously impossible instruments, but it will never replace the "emotional imprint" of a human. "I truly believe that AI will help people discover new sounds and genres of music; however, great art, including music, arises directly from human emotions," says Darroudi, who will be speaking at the GITEX GLOBAL Ai Everything conference in Dubai next week. "Happiness, sadness, love, pain, fear—these are things that a computer simply cannot reproduce. The human 'emotional imprint' is still required to create great music and art, and I see AI as a tool for creativity, not as a creator."

AI in artistic creation

Darroudi's comments are supported by his conference colleague at GITEX GLOBAL, Suik Lim, co-founder of Pebblely, a generative AI tool that transforms dull photos into beautiful marketing materials in just seconds. Lim compares the emergence of AI to the advent of photography in the 19th century, which likely raised doubts among the realistic artists of that time. "When photography was invented in the 19th century, it probably elicited a similar range of reactions within the artistic circles of that era," says Lim, speaking at Ai Everything about generative AI media in the real world. "But looking back, we see that photography freed artists from the need to depict reality as it is and contributed to the rise of Impressionism." Similarly, the current surge in AI-based technologies will undoubtedly serve as fertile ground for the emergence of new creative movements. To expect otherwise would be to seriously underestimate the ingenuity of the human creative spirit.

Democratization of creativity

Meanwhile, Moti Levi, the CEO of DeviantArt, the largest online community of artists in the world with over 85 million users and 500 million pieces of art, stated that DeviantArt is witnessing exponential growth in the number of people using generative AI tools.

In his opinion, this is no different from other technological breakthroughs in the history of creativity, including the digital art revolution and the emergence of tools like Photoshop. "AI tools help democratize creativity," Levi said. "These tools empower people who have always wanted to be creative to translate their dreams, fears, thoughts, and feelings into something more than just words. Now, with the advent of generative AI tools, people can express themselves in new ways."

Levi said that there are already many creators in the artist community incorporating AI tools into their workflows, but AI tools, like any other tools, are not art; they are just another technological instrument. "We are strong advocates for any technology that pushes the boundaries of creativity and allows more people to express themselves," he added. "We need to embrace AI tools, but we also need to be smart and responsible in how we use these tools, ensuring appropriate protection and balance for the creator community."
