The USA defends the UN vote "against" Palestine's membership.
The White House commented on the United States' decision not to support the UN resolution regarding Palestinian statehood. According to an administration representative, this move primarily indicates the need for negotiations within the framework of the Middle East. The United States found itself among the few opponents when the UN General Assembly, by a majority vote, adopted a resolution affirming the possibility of full membership for Palestine in this international organization. This outcome was perceived by many as a clear protest against the actions of Israel and the United States amid growing global discontent regarding the conflict between Israel and Hamas.
National Security Representative John F. Kirby emphasized that President Biden remains fully committed to the idea of establishing a Palestinian state, but believes that UN resolutions cannot ensure its establishment.“We continue to believe in the strength and potential of a two-state solution, which implies the establishment of an independent state for the Palestinian people.”“He noted that, in his opinion, the most effective way to achieve this goal is through direct negotiations between the parties to the conflict, rather than voting in the UN on such resolutions.”
The voting took place amid tense relations between the United States and Israel, which is their closest ally in the Middle East.
The United States remains the main supplier of arms to Israel, and Biden hopes to use this influence to persuade Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to abandon the planned attack on the city of Rafah, where over a million Palestinians have sought refuge. This challenge must be addressed in the context of a complex political situation and a humanitarian disaster threatening the lives of hundreds of thousands of people.
The world's attention is focused on the events in the Middle East, and the reactions of countries to the conflict indicate a high level of uncertainty. Diplomatic efforts and cooperation could become key tools for peacefully resolving the situation; however, as history has shown, tactical maneuvers may prove ineffective without a genuine willingness from the parties to make concessions and find compromises. At this stage, it is clearly necessary to unite the efforts of all interested parties to prevent further human casualties and achieve stability in the region.
