Tatoa Palace will be turned into a museum
The former palace complex of the Greek royal family, Tatoi Mansion, will become a state museum. According to the head of the Greek Ministry of Culture and Sports, Lina Mendoni, the chambers in Athens will be open to the public by 2025. The announcement was made the day after the funeral of former King Constantine II on the estate.
The building is still under restoration, but some projects, such as turning the palace into a museum, will be completed by 2025. For example, the opening of the museum in the stables of King George I will be completed and all the necessary infrastructure will be in place. The Greek government also plans to restore the gardens, which contain several royal tombs.
The view from Tatoi to Mount Parnita was damaged two years ago by a forest fire and was abandoned until the death of Constantine II. Restoration crews have been working tirelessly to restore this magnificent residence in preparation for the late king's funeral this week.
In 2021, the Greek government, having legalized its ownership of the site after the abolition of the monarchy, said it plans to turn the palace into a hotel with cafes, restaurants and a five-star spa. However, these plans have now been shelved and the palace will remain only a museum, park and tourist attraction.
The Tatoi Palace, formerly used by the Greek royal family as a summer residence, is located in Athens. It had been 50 years since anyone had lived in Tatoi; after the abolition of the monarchy and a coup d'état, the Greek government confiscated all royal properties, including Mont Repo on the island of Corfu, where the late Duke of Edinburgh was born.
