The dark company backing Trump's bonds has suddenly become even darker.

The right side of the political spectrum has long been associated with “crooks at every turn.” So it's not surprising that the insurance company covering Donald Trump's bail in a fraud case is itself dishonest.

An investigation by The Daily Beast revealed that Knight Specialty Insurance, the company backing the $175 million payment related to Trump's civil penalty for fraud, is not licensed to carry insurance in a solvent state by the state's Financial Services AuthorityNew Yorkand was not sifted by the associationpoliciesover state lines, an agency of insurance companies that provides voluntary audits of other insurers' finances.

The reason is that the staffapartmentKnight is inCalifornia, doesn't seem to have enough money in their treasury accounts to allocate Trump's bonds.

According to The Beast, Trump's pledge represents a third of the company's assets and exceeds its total equity. Maria T. Vullo, former financial regulatorNew York, called the decision to bail out Trump “unfathomable for an insurer, to reaffirm the commitment.”

The company itself seems aware of its position: according to The Beast, Knight is not legally obligated to pay Trump's fine if the former president's appeal is unsuccessful.
