This month, a New York Times/Siena College poll asked voters how much they believe former President Donald Trump respects women: a lot, a little, not much, or not at all? And you’ll never guess what happened next. The majority of men—54%—said that Trump respects women either "very much" or "a little." Only 31% of women saw the situation that way. Trump, a man known for bragging about grabbing women by their intimate parts—and who is currently facing trial for covering up a sex scandal involving a porn star—has long symbolized a kind of machismo that many people perceive as misogynistic.

But this disparity is important to understand in the upcoming elections, which seem likely to hinge on the size of the gender gap between Trump, who enjoys greater support from men, and President Joe Biden, who leads among women. Our poll showed that Trump has a 20-point advantage among men, while Biden has a 16-point advantage among women. "The formula for any Democrat in a close race is to win among women more than they lose among men, and, frankly, we’re not doing that right now," said Celinda Lake, a Democratic pollster for Biden's 2020 campaign.
