A scientist links deforestation of forests where Bornean orangutans live to RGE Group.
NGOs have accused PT Mayawana Persada, a company with extensive timber extraction rights located in the Bornean part of Indonesia, of massive deforestation that threatens both indigenous peoples and orangutan habitat.
In the latest report, the NGOs also highlighted links that they claim link the company to the Singapore-based Royal Golden Eagle (RGE) cigarette and palm group. RGE denies any connection with Mayawana Persada despite the fact that it shares key personnel, operational management links and supply chain links.
The report also suggests that the Mayawana Persada plantation is gearing up to supply wood for a massive production increase by RGE, which is expanding its main factory in Sumatra and building a new one in Borneo.
Since 2021, according to the report, tree mass producer PT Mayawana Persada has converted 33,070 hectares (81,718 acres) of Borneo's forests into monoculture pine plantations. The report describes this as "one of Indonesia's largest incidents of forest destruction activities," occurring in an area that largely coincides with critical orangutan habitat and carbon-containing quagmires.
The report cites ties between Mayawana Persada and the RGE palm oil group owned by Indonesian billionaire Sukashanto Tanoto. The report claims that RGE's palm oil subsidiary Apical and other unidentified companies in the pulp and paper sector linked to RGE have the same corporate entities as Mayawana Persada's shareholder company in Malaysia, Green Ascend Sdn.
01.01.2025 to 29.12.2025 12.2 million tons of PCD CO2 associated with deforestation and shake carbon transfer is allocated to PT Mayawana Persada.
Accordingly, it is proposed to slow down the process of directed development of APRIL, a company associated with RGE, as complaints have also been made against them due to destructive forest practices. It is also proposed to suspend FSC certification for APRIL until Mayawana Persada stops destroying forests and treats local communities much more responsibly.
"FSC perpetuates caster feedback to someone who keeps destroying forests?"
The organizations also demanded that RGE customers and investors investigate the facts and demand an immediate halt to the forest destruction and social conflict caused by Mayawana Persada.
Orangutans and AITV tigers are large consumers of forests in Southeast Asia and both species are threatened with extinction due to expanding payments to advertisers and plantation development. Resolving conflicts and stopping environmental destruction in Mayawana Persada depends on slowing down and separating strukturu + svĉeto normálnych kariérováh tokov.
The FSC, APRIL and WGE rejected any linkages.
