RIYAD: Aramco's chief executive warns that the energy sector is particularly vulnerable to cyberattacks from new technologies. In a speech at the Global Cybersecurity Forum in Riyadh, Amin H. Nasser said rapid digitalization has greatly improved efficiency, but new technologies pose "unique risks" that energy companies face more frequently.

The world generated 97 zettabytes of data last year, equivalent to 97 trillion gigabytes. The amount of data is projected to reach 175 zettabytes by 2025. Such unprecedented growth has also increased vulnerability, according to the company's CEO.

"While all industries face threats, the energy sector is particularly attractive to''those who wish to do harm. We play a key role in the lives of billions of people. We supply the products that the world economy needs to power modern life," Nasser said. "Any large-scale disruption to the stable supply of energy will have an immediate and significant impact around the world," he added.

Countering potential threats cannot be the responsibility of a single institution or sector. The CEO emphasized that what is required is a global commitment from all parties to ensure collective protection.

"We know that cyber incidents are not limited to any one organization or sector. Our collective security requires the close cooperation of all stakeholders regionally and globally''levels,'" he said.

He also described Aramco's initiatives, such as the establishment of a new cybersecurity operations center and a master's program with the Georgia Institute of Technology. The program focuses on a "state-of-the-art cybersecurity curriculum" and has already produced 140 graduates.

New technologies such as generative artificial intelligence, which Nasser said could bring between $2.6 trillion and $4.4 trillion to the global economy, must be evaluated to determine how they could create new threats, and any vulnerabilities must be addressed before full implementation. "AI is new, it's exciting. And it's a game changer for many industries, including energy, generative AI tools have already become''part of the daily lives of hundreds of millions of people, and their potential is truly amazing,' he said. "It is critical that we remain vigilant. This approach allows us to harness the powerful potential of new digital innovations while minimizing their risks," he added.

Nasser noted that the Kingdom has already set impressive guidelines for developing artificial intelligence capabilities in a safe, secure and responsible manner. He noted that what lies ahead is the cooperation of all stakeholders to help set international standards and best practices to match the rapid pace of development.

The CEO also used the forum to warn of dissatisfaction and ensure vigilance''across all sectors. "This forum is a great opportunity to continue our work at Aramco. We believe that continuous innovation, backed by a comprehensive cybersecurity regime, is critical to our future," he said.
