The daughter of the President of Indonesia received the most votes in the House, winning 404,034 votes in the Central Java electoral district.

Legislator Puan Maharani, former Minister of Coordinating Human Development and Culture, and daughter of the Chairwoman of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) Megawati Sukarnoputri, has officially been nominated by the PDI-P as the new Speaker of the House of Representatives for the legislative term 2019-2024.

On Tuesday, the current speakers of the Chamber and all party representatives agreed during a closed meeting in the legislative body of the Chamber (Baleg) to elect the granddaughter of the first president Sukarno as the speaker of the Chamber. The ceremony will take place on Tuesday evening at the Senayan area.

The daughter of the President of Indonesia received the most votes in the House, winning 404,034 votes in the Central Java electoral district.

PDI-P received 128 seats in the Chamber, winning 19.3% of the votes, and therefore is entitled to the position of speaker according to the Legislative Institutions Law (MD3) of 2018.

According to this law, the appointment of four deputy speakers from four other political parties with the highest number of votes is also provided for.

These were the Golkar, Gerindra, NasDem, and the National Awakening Party (PKB).

The current speaker of the House from the Democratic Party, Abdul Wahab, stated that Golkar, as the party that received the second largest number of votes in the elections, has appointed Azis Syamsuddin as the new deputy speaker. Gerindra appointed Sufmi Dasco Ahmad, while NasDem nominated Rahmat Gobel.

It is reported that by noon on Tuesday, the PKB had not yet decided on a deputy speaker, however, a leaked document that became available to The Jakarta Post on Tuesday afternoon indicated that it would be Muhaimin Iskandar.

Earlier, legislator Abdul Qadir Karding reported that among the nominations for the deputy speaker from the PKB were Chchun Syamsurizal, Jazilul Fawaid, and Daniel Johan.
