Russia has detained its first South Korean citizen on suspicion of espionage.

Russian authorities have detained a South Korean citizen on charges of cyber espionage, the first case involving a Korean.

Russian authorities have arrested a South Korean citizen on cyber espionage charges, marking the first case involving a Korean national. "During the investigation of the espionage case, Baek Won-soon, a South Korean citizen, was detained in Vladivostok and taken into custody under a court order. He was transferred from Vladivostok to Moscow for further investigation," the source told the TASS news agency.

Russian security services believe Baek Won-soon was passing classified information to foreign intelligence agencies. The man was detained in Vladivostok earlier this year and transferred to Moscow in late February. The South Korean citizen is in custody at Lefortovo prison.

Yesterday, the Lefortovo court extended his detention until June 15. The Russian government has categorized the case as "top secret," and no further details have been released to the public.

The South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that it is providing necessary consular support to a South Korean national. However, due to the ongoing investigation of the case, the ministry declined to provide further details.

In the last year, Russia has detained several foreign nationals, accusing them of various crimes. The situation has escalated since the occupation of Ukraine, and it is reasonable to expect that these arrests may have political and negotiating implications in the future.
