Walhi argues that the government's shrimp farm project will repeat the failure of the national food farm.

On January 23, 2024 at 20:20 local time, a press conference was held in Jakarta where the Indonesian Environment Forum (Walhi) expressed its criticism of the government's plans to develop a shrimp farming project. Walhi said the project has the potential to replicate the failure of the food estate program.

Walhi's coastal and marine spokesperson, Parid Ridwanuddin, said the shrimp farm threatens the mangrove ecosystem in the country. Besides, the project has the same concept as food estates, which have already been found to be unsuccessful and damaging to the ecology.

"The concept of food estates in the forest area is being repeated on the coast. We know this project will fail just like farming on land or in the forest," Parid told a press conference in Jakarta.

He explained that the farm focuses on the cultivation of shrimp of the wannamei variety, as it mirrors well sold in both domestic and international markets. One of the projects is located in Kebumen, Central Java.

Additionally, the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) has opened a project in Sumba, East Nusa Tenggara.

Parid expressed that massive coastal logging in Sumba could lead to a decrease in the mangrove ecosystem.

Parid finds the shrimp farming project ironic, as President Joko Widodo, often raises the issue of mangrove conservation. Indonesia was also elected to co-chair the 28th Conference of Parties on Climate Change (COP 28) in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

At the forum, Indonesia was chosen to lead dozens of countries in discussing mangrove ecosystems. "But domestic policies are actually contradictory, including the shrimp farming project," Parid added.
