In 1914, George Vanderbilt died, and his wife Edith sold about 87,000 acres of land to the United States Forest Service Authority.

In 1930, Cornelia and her husband John Cecil opened the mansion to the public. Since then, various properties have been added to the estate including the Biltmore Winery, the Inn on Biltmore Estate and the village of Antler Hill with the Village Hotel. The Biltmore Estate now spans 8,000 acres and is surrounded by gardens designed by American landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted.

The mansion includes 35 bedrooms, 43 bathrooms and 65 fireplaces. It also houses a valuable collection of art and artifacts, including pieces from the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC. It also has a swimming pool, bowling alley and huge gardens. This story was published in January 2020.
