China has expressed its willingness to treat the United States with understanding now that it is facing an economic slowdown. Chinese Vice President Han Zheng said China is willing to "strengthen communication and dialog with the United States at all levels, develop mutually beneficial cooperation, competently manage differences and jointly tackle global challenges," according to Agence France-Presse.

Han seems eager to set an optimistic tone ahead of Chinese dictator Xi Jinping's meeting with President Joe Biden in San Francisco on Nov. 15. According to ABC News, the talks will be separate from the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit. The chances of a successful meeting are slim, given that last''Consult says the proportion of Chinese adults who called the U.S. an "enemy" has dropped from more than 80% in April 2022 to 48% last month. as friendly in early 2022, but now 45% view the U.S. favorably, Axios reported. Morning Consult noted that Chinese people's softer stance toward the United States "is probably driven more by public anxiety over the country's troubled economy than by political changes. "

China is currently facing astronomical youth unemployment, a real estate crisis, debt problems and declining foreign investor confidence. Liu Shijin, a member of the Monetary Policy Committee of the People's Bank of China, on Wednesday tried to give''s optimistic assessment of the Chinese economy, stating that "China is still at a medium-speed growth stage of about 5% and may have the potential for medium-speed growth within five to ten years," Reuters reported. Liu acknowledged that key economic growth factors have slowed in the Asian country, prompting China to seek a new growth model. Continued tensions with the U.S. will not help China overcome its slump. Last month, Xi Jinping told US Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, "We have a thousand reasons to improve relations with China, but not one reason to destroy them," AFP reported.
