The province of Vojvodina in Serbia is home to many charming and attractive castles that testify to the rich history of this country.

The Bissingen-Nippenburg Castle, located in the small village of Vlajkovac, is one of the symbols of Vojvodina's Austro-Hungarian past. It is truly a fairytale place that hides dark and frightening secrets. Unfortunately, it faces a bleak and uncertain future. Left to fate and the unstable hands of time, this once magnificent architectural masterpiece is slowly crumbling. The history of the place speaks of a bygone era and the locals consider it cursed, whispering of the horrors of the past. But is it too late to save''residents. Since then, its fate has remained uncertain. So far, no conservation work has been undertaken to return this marvelous building to its original state.

Restoration attempts

The Bissingen-Nippenburg Castle came to public attention when the last male member of the Bissingen-Nippenburg family, Franz Xaver, Count of Bissingen-Nippenburg, made attempts to regain ownership over the castle. A resident of Frankfurt in Germany, Count Franz Xaver made a formal request for restitution in 2006, backed by new Serbian laws.

However, he noted that the cost of preserving and reconstructing the castle would be enormous and almost impossible. Consequently, he expressed his fears and stated that "more important''to keep the building than to give it back to his family." He then expressed his agreement to the local administration of Vrsac, which has signed a 40-year lease with leading Italian company Vega International. The company has drawn up plans to renovate the castle and turn it into a luxury hotel and major tourist destination.

The uncertain future

Oddly enough, however, the Italian company soon abandoned its efforts, leaving the whole situation in a state of "in doubt". Bissingen-Nippenburg Castle is still waiting for its future. It awaits a better future or inevitable destruction in a few decades. Today it stands amidst the overgrown remnants of the park, transformed into a dilapidated shadow of its incredibly elegant past.''Technically it's closed to visitors. However, the castle is completely open and abandoned. From time to time, visitors wishing to enjoy the remnants of its 19th century splendor have no difficulty entering its walls. The castle is located just 9 kilometers from the nearest regional center of Vrsac and just off the main regional road, at the entrance to the village of Vlajkovac.
