Chateau Le Borde in the Loire Valley, France, offers more than just golf.
The luxury resort home market is an unpredictable one. So how do you attract him? Perhaps new buildings with architectural foundations, first-class golf, a private chateau, horseback riding and pop-ups.
A piece of history beginning with a baron who created pen foam came to Les Bordes Estate, a world-renowned golf resort founded in 1986 by Baron Marcel Bisch in France's picturesque Loire Valley.
The new goal of Les Bordes Estate is to become a community for secondary owners, and it's beautiful location adds to its appeal. The Loire Valley is famous for its picturesque scenery and countless vineyards, where you can stop for a glass of wine along the Loire River and is only a weekend drive from Paris.
This 1,400-acre property (90 minutes by car) is in a region with many Michelin-starred restaurants (20, the estate's marketing material says). Homeowners receive membership to an exceptional golf club that has long been well known on golf tournaments and can use two golf courses, but golf-loving is not at all necessary for a good time.
Family activities include a contact petting zoo (and you'll find a pop-up in the form of a giant rabbit), tennis, go-karting, Pickleball and horseback riding on the estate's paths. A Six Senses hotel and spa has begun operations at the restored Les Bordes Castle.
The first part of the transformation, which began in 2018, was handled by architecture firm Michaelis Boyd, which has also worked on Soho House clubs in Los Angeles, Berlin and Oxfordshire, England. They renovated the existing summer house and mansion with 7,800 square feet.
3550-square-foot restaurant and bar sucks in golf course views behind glass doors and black glass and steel windows. They harmonize with stone walls, tile roofs and lime floors. Next to the bar are gorgeous velvet upholstered sofas in front of a stone fireplace.
"We need to transform the Le Bord site from an international golf resort into a luxurious sheltered haven for residents tired of the hustle and bustle of the city," says Alex Michaelis, partner and co-founder of Michaelis Boyd. "Creating a luxurious and cozy atmosphere was our goal," adds Matthew Saunders, director of Michaelis Boyd.
Like the restored mansion, the new residences, 45 in total, exude sophisticated luxury both inside and out. They are designed to feel like private estates, many of which have private pools. They range in size from 1,800 square feet to 6,000 square feet and cost from $1.6 million to $7 million.
Nuance allows you to choose between traditional and more contemporary styles, with a variety of finishes. For example, the floors could be stone tile or farmhouse-style wooden planks. The three shade options of local stone are particularly eye-catching. The facades are enlivened by architectural window detailing, visible wood beams and clay roofs.
The architectural team paid special attention to integration with surrounding trees, lakes and historic buildings, placing the new buildings in an impervious wooded area. "When designing new buildings, it's important to see the topography, understand the landscape, wind patterns and solar exposure," explains Michaelis. It's something the golfer appreciates as well.
