Dallas' West quadrant: a harmony of history, innovation and nature

The West District of historic downtown Dallas, Texas, USA, formerly known as an area of old warehouses and factories, is now thriving with new real estate development and an influx of creative companies. This vibrant spirit references the area's roots as a manufacturing center and leverages its proximity to the entertainment and dining venues of downtown Dallas to attract a wide range of residents and tourists.
In this dynamic new context, West Central Square was created by James Corner Field Operations (JCFO), a design agency that specializes internationally. This contemporary urban park combines technological, natural and structural elements to create a truly''An innovative space for public activity based on the historic heritage of a place.
JCFO and the Parks for Downtown Dallas organization
JCFO worked closely with Parks for Downtown Dallas and the City's Parks and Recreation Department to develop the park. Streetlife's unique furniture is the centerpiece and activator of life in the park. A variety of customized fixed solutions were installed, including curved benches, circular platforms for flexible seating, and steps with seats. Hinting at the best of community life past and present, round podiums with comfortable seating are reminiscent of traditional downtown parks on prairie lands.
Nearby is a modern "workroom" under a light''tent that houses a 15-meter table from Streetlife's Solid series, designed by JCFO in collaboration with Streetlife's R&D team and equipped with WiFi and chargers. Next to the desk are brightly colored tables and chairs on wheels, blurring the lines between work and play and promoting flexibility.
Adapting to the Dallas climate
In response to Dallas' hot climate, the light tent features fans and lighting fixtures, and the interactive water table responds to the weather, transforming into a reflecting pool on calm days and becoming a hydration system on hot days.

Biophilic elements and sustainabilityThe park features biophilic sculptural elements, raised beds and scenic gardens with meandering paths and playful elevation changes that attract visitors and create places for rest and relaxation. Forty-four new trees and organic flowerbed forms are a tribute to the lush flora of the blackland prairies of Texas. At the same time, the palette of perennials and grasses for the lower tier was carefully selected to ensure year-round sustainability and to emphasize native plants that require minimal watering and serve''attractors of butterflies and insects. Streetlife has provided classic elements of the park with modern design, such as curved benches following the curves of the planting areas, offering places to rest and observe.
In the heart of the park, where the paths intersect, a circular bench is placed around a newly planted Burr Oak tree, accessible from all sides, creating a central and inviting space for people to gather, relax and interact.
In conclusion, the West Square serves the community in which it is located and is an example of a modern public space that combines technology and nature. This modern and adaptable green oasis reflects the region's rich historical heritage in a changing''urban context. Find out more about this exciting project.
