Establishments of New Orleans: a culinary escape in the legendary city
Pubs and bars with neon lights in the French Quarter of New Orleans, USA - you won't find anything like it anywhere else. The opportunity to enjoy the warm climate, delicious gumbo, and lively music is available here at any time of the day. The residents of this city are true entertainers, whether it's an ordinary weekend evening, a Jazz festival, or Mardi Gras. They are masters of hospitality, whether it's a casual crab dinner or a visit to a high-end restaurant.
My last trip
My last trip was during Mardi Gras, and to be honest, this city is always a place for fun, even without the festive atmosphere that comes with this annual ritual. I wouldn't recommend coming here during Mardi Gras, as the city can be overcrowded and hard to navigate. Any regular day in NOLA is lively enough for everyone.
New Orleans is a city of incredible beauty and sophistication.
New Orleans is a city of incredible beauty and sophistication, from the luxurious mansions in the Garden District to the hipster lofts in the warehouse district. You can find delicious food in almost any corner here, not to mention the tasty cocktails. During this trip, I discovered Algiers Point, a neighborhood directly across the Mississippi from Canal Street. It is one of the oldest areas in the city, featuring beautiful old houses and several interesting restaurants and bars. The "Dry Dock" café is right next to the ferry terminal and is perfect for enjoying a good Bloody Mary and tasting gumbo while you wait for the ferry.
Landmarks to visit
This was my snack before heading to the "Janna" restaurant in the warehouse district for lunch. I'm very picky about pasta since I lived in Italy for several years, and I can assure you that the fennel sausage orecchiette was so amazing that we ordered two portions right away (no regrets about that). The roasted cabbage was accented with citrus notes, which added freshness.
Sometimes a new discovery allows you to feel the old again, which is why I visited the "House of Napoleon." I used to drink a lot of late cocktails here, but lunch in the sunny garden exceeded all expectations - especially with the taste of "Muffuletta" and "Jambalaya."
Another great new addition is the restaurant "Mamu" in the French Quarter. It offers delicious French dishes, such as mushroom soup with egg and saffron, as well as crispy and aromatic celery stalks. Their wine menu includes several unconventional options, such as Pecorino from Abruzzo, Vouvray from the Loire, and a bit of Grüner from Austria.
Convenient location of the hotel
The "Eliza Jane" hotel has a great location at the lower end of Canal Street in the warehouse district. A former home of the "Times-Picayune" newspaper and other businesses, the hotel features cozy brick walls and an industrial atmosphere. The rooms here are comfortable, and the lobby serves as a meeting place where everything feels like a big cocktail party. The hotel has an excellent restaurant called "Couvant," where you can order dishes right to your room. We started our lunch with half a dozen oysters, followed by a bunch of mussels and fried chicken with asparagus.
Traditions of New Orleans
The "Kuvan" restaurant even offers large ice cubes with little purple plastic babies inside, which were used during Mardi Gras: this is a New Orleans tradition where the person who finds the baby in the King Cake has to buy the cake for their friends the following year. It was unusual, as the cake is typically made without babies inside.
Next to the "Eliza Jane" hotel is the "International House" hotel, which is home to the famous cocktail establishment "Loa," a long-standing tradition near Canal Street. Bartender Abigail Gullo is a true professional and makes an excellent signature cocktail, the "Hemingway Daiquiri," which has long been my favorite rum drink. Unfortunately, during this trip, I wasn't able to visit classic places like "Brennan's" and "Commander's Palace."
