The company's portfolio now includes significant positions in D.R. Horton, Lennar and NVR. A potential explosion in residential construction could benefit all of these companies.

Housing shortage

According to the National Association of Realtors, there is a shortage''housing from 5.5 million to 6.8 million units. That's because more new households have been created than new homes have been built in the past decade since the Great Financial Crisis. Now that prices for building materials have fallen and demand remains stable, investors are betting on a boom in home construction.

Opportunities for investors

Small investors can also become participants in this segment of the market through a publicly traded homebuilder or SPDR Homebuilder ETF.
