Housing crisis in Dijon: young people are forced to stay in hotels due to a lack of housing, says an agent - France Bleu.

Searching for an apartment to rent or a house to buy in Dijon (Ivory Coast) has become a real challenge. The price of real estate for sale has significantly increased since 2018. At the same time, interest rates have risen from zero to almost 5% in just a few months. First-time buyers, those looking to purchase property for the first time, have become the first victims of this crisis, as have students who are still left without housing. The market is completely constrained.

When asked by Catherine Vandriessche, president of the Ivory Coast representation of the National Federation of Real Estate (FNÉIM), about the state of the real estate market in Dijon, she responded with a figure that speaks for itself. "The price increase in Dijon over the past five years has been one of the highest in France, with an increase of more than 30%. These prices, along with rising interest rates, are blocking people who want to buy for the first time.

As a result, they continue to live in rented housing, and this is how we end up with a completely strained market. Today, we lack T2, T3, and T4 apartments for rent."

And this is why young people coming to study in Dijon are left without rental apartments.

These young people still haven't been able to find housing for the school year. "Some of these young people have had to turn to hotels or Airbnb due to a lack of rental housing. Many of them are coming from other regions and have no family here to provide them with accommodation. They have been forced to quickly find a solution to avoid sleeping on the street," says Aurelien Pomares, a real estate agent at the Buet agency on Godran Street in Dijon. To resolve the situation in the market, the only solution, according to the agent, is for property owners to lower their selling prices.
