It is located at an altitude of 844 meters above sea level, in the Joya de Baza, Sierra Nevada Valley, near the Gallego River. This town gave its name to Sierra de Baza. The dome-shaped Mount Habalcón faces the town from the northwest. The municipality is on the southern edge of the Altiplano de Granada. The Lady Baza sculpture is a prehistoric artifact discovered in the area on July 22, 1971. The city was founded by the Iberians in the 4th century BC and named Basta, as it was known in Roman times. As part of the Roman province of Tarracona, it was an important commercial center and an early bishopric (see below). Under the Moors, Baza was an important frontier post on the border with the Kingdom of Murcia. It was also a major commercial center with a population of over 50,000, making it one of the three most important cities in the Kingdom of Granada.
