It is located at an altitude of 844 meters above sea level, in the Joya de Baza, Sierra Nevada Valley, near the Gallego River. This town gave its name to Sierra de Baza. The Lady Baza sculpture is a prehistoric artifact discovered in the area on July 22, 1971. The city was founded by the Iberians in the 4th century BC and named Basta, as it was known in Roman times. Under the Moors, Baza was an important frontier post on the border with the Kingdom of Murcia.
