Istanbul made a profound impression on me, which prompted me to study the Turkish language. My first encounter with this amazing country began six years ago when I visited Istanbul for the first time. Realizing that this place would become my second home, I understood how important it was to master the language in order to better integrate into the culture and everyday life. Fortunately, learning Turkish turned out to be quite accessible for me, and within just six months, I was able to reach an acceptable level. I studied independently, using a variety of free resources online. In addition, I actively watched movies in Turkish and interacted with locals, which significantly contributed to my progress. Currently, my language level allows me to confidently engage in everyday conversations, handle business matters, and even build a business.

Joint adventure in Turkey

My adventure in Turkey didn't start alone: I came here with my sister. She is not familiar with the language yet, so in most cases, I handle the organizational matters. Right now, we are actively working on creating our joint business—a beauty salon where we plan to offer manicure services, permanent makeup, and other procedures. At first, we will perform all the services ourselves, but as our business grows in popularity, we would like to hire employees.

Challenges on the way to opening a salon

Although we are already in the process of opening our salon in Istanbul, the path to this endeavor is proving to be not so simple. Especially challenging moments arise with the documentation and obtaining a residence permit. We have been waiting for it for more than four months. However, there is some positive news: we have been promised that all the necessary documents will be ready within the next two weeks. After we receive them, I hope everything will move faster and easier. At the moment, we are forced to sign the lease for the premises for our salon in the name of a Turkish citizen, which certainly creates its own difficulties.

Support from friends

Our successes have largely been made possible thanks to the help of friends. For example, to apply for a residence permit, I turned to an acquaintance who was able to confirm that I live with her and that she supports me, while I do not need financial assistance from the state. Based on this information, I was promised a temporary residence permit for one year. This is despite the fact that my sister and I already have our own apartment. Unfortunately, we couldn't obtain a visa through the purchase of property because we spent a long time searching for a suitable option, and time was running out.

Illusions about obtaining a residence permit

I previously had the illusion that simply purchasing property in Turkey would be enough to obtain a residence permit. However, to my surprise, the entire process turned out to be not as straightforward as I thought. I submitted the initial documents even before the deal was finalized, but I am still waiting for the completion of this process. Life without this important document in Turkey is quite challenging, as I am unable to handle many everyday tasks, such as getting internet connected or registering a mobile phone.

News about foreignreal estate

For those who want to stay updated on foreignreal estate news, I recommend subscribing to a Telegram channel that publishes the latest trends and updates in the market. It's worth noting that the process of purchasing property for foreigners in Turkey is constantly being simplified, which opens up new opportunities for investments in the country.

Please note that if you purchased a mobile phone outside of Turkey, it will only work in the country for 120 days. After this period, you may experience signal issues.

Simplifying the real estate purchasing process

As for purchasing real estate, the process has noticeably simplified compared to the conditions that existed before. Nowadays, securing a loan takes just one day, unlike in previous years when the wait could stretch on for a month or more.

Earlier, Turkish government authorities sought information about the buyer from Moscow to determine his legal status and financial capabilities. Currently, this work is being carried out by specialized experts who can be found in real estate agencies.

  • Their services usually cost around 1500 lira (approximately 16,500 rubles).
  • They provide foreign clients with information about the apartment's features.
  • They are checking for any debts from the previous owner.
  • They are collecting data about the building and checking the buyer themselves.

Searching for an apartment

We found a suitable apartment on a local website that is similar to "Avito." After selecting the property, we contacted the agency, scheduled a viewing, and ultimately closed the deal.

The whole process went quite smoothly; the only stumbling block was financial issues, although it wasn't due to a lack of funds.

These spacious 210-square-meter apartments offer three-bedroom layouts with breathtaking panoramic views of the Bosphorus, located in the Sarıyer district, specifically in the sought-after Maslak area, which is considered one of the most prestigious corners on the European side of the city.

This well-established area is renowned not only for its beautiful views of the water expanses but also for the green forests surrounding it, which significantly enhances its appeal for living. Moreover, Maslak is known for its cultural venues and art galleries, creating a rich cultural environment for its residents.

Apartments with affordable prices

Additionally, there is an excellent option—a 335,000 euro apartment located in a new and modern area on the Asian side of the city, in Maltepe. This project offers its residents not only stunning views of the Princes' Islands but also convenient access to various public transportation and a well-developed infrastructure.

Nearby are:

  • medical institutions,
  • educational institutions,
  • shopping malls.

All of this makes this place wonderful for comfortable living and leisure.

Apartment in Büyükçekmece

A property is also available on the market for 340,000 euros in Büyükçekmece, just thirty minutes' drive from Istanbul Airport. The complex is located near the main highways E5 and E80, making it very convenient for getting around the city.

Next to the apartment is the Mimarsinan shore, which has a large number of shops, restaurants, and recreational areas. This area is famous for having the longest coastline, offering residents a variety of amenities such as:

  • baths,
  • entertainment venues,
  • opportunities for walks by the water.

Available studios

Among the more affordable options, there is a 30-square-meter studio for 72,300 euros, located in the new financial center that is moving from Ankara to Istanbul this year. This event is expected to create many new jobs, which will undoubtedly increase the demand for rental and purchase of real estate in the area.

In the new metro line project, which is set to open in early 2025, the nearest station will be just a 15-minute walk away.

Apartments with good conditions

There are also options in a lower price range, such as an apartment for 426,484 euros, with a total area of 62 square meters, which is equipped with all the necessary infrastructure. The complex is already fully ready for occupancy and is located in close proximity to the new business center on the Asian side of Istanbul.

This living space includes:

The apartment is already equipped with everything necessary, including built-in appliances such as:

The heating system is implemented through underfloor heating, and the complex itself offers access to a gym and other amenities for residents.

Financial strategy

At the moment, we have a certain amount of funds, around three million rubles, which were initially in our bank account. We didn't plan to withdraw the money before leaving, assuming that all financial transactions could be easily carried out on-site through a partner bank.

In line with this strategy, we are focused on the quick and efficient acquisition of real estate in a rapidly developing city like Istanbul.

Recently, it became known that our former partners have ceased their collaboration with us. This has led to high fees for cash withdrawals, which would be undesirable for us. As a result, we had to visit Russia again to obtain cash and then return to Turkey. But our adventures didn't end there.

We received rubles and decided to exchange them in Istanbul rather than in our hometown. Unfortunately, the currency exchange offices in Istanbul were unable to process such a large amount. So, my sister and I took the cash again and headed to Baku to our mom, where we finally managed to convert the rubles into Turkish lira.

Useful tips for currency exchange

  • If you want to avoid issues when carrying cash, it's recommended to take dollars with you.
  • Please note that opening an account in a Turkish bank without a residence permit is not possible.

When we were deciding which apartment to rent, we were looking for a location that we would like. We wanted the place to be close to the metro station and a salon. In the end, we acquired a euro-style one-bedroom apartment with an area of 65 square meters in the Kaytakhane district for a sum of2.4 million rublesOur salon is located in Osmanbey, Bomonti. The metro ride between these two places takes about twenty minutes.

The variety of housing in Turkey

It is also worth noting that the variety of housing options in Turkey pleasantly surprises Russians.

The idea of starting a business

As for business ideas, the thought of opening my own beauty salon came quite naturally, since this field is not as developed here as one would like. In Russia, gel nail manicures are widely available, whereas in Turkey this service is less popular and often provided in unappealing sanitary conditions.

Once, I visited one of the local salons, but upon seeing the level of hygiene, I quickly left, not wanting to put my health at risk. In our salon, everything will be at the highest level of sterility! We decided to name our salon..."Matryoshka"to emphasize our Russian identity and attract clients from Russia.

Business licensing

As for licenses, running a business requires the appropriate permits; however, if you are working independently, a license is not mandatory in this case. We do not plan to hire employees at the moment, so we are not rushing to complete all the necessary paperwork.

In the near future, I plan to register a sole proprietorship in my name, but for now, all the paperwork is in the name of a Turkish citizen since we do not have residency permits.

Life in Turkey

Speaking about life in Turkey, I would like to note that I find it easy to connect with the locals. Over the years, I have built a wide circle of acquaintances, and interacting with them brings me joy. Our cultures have a lot in common: I am from the Caucasus, and we represent a Muslim community, so we quickly find common ground.

However, the Turks have their own nuances – they are much more oriented towards Europe. For example, locals can easily tell a guest:“Welcome to Turkey, but it’s better to stay in a hotel.”This small observation highlights their traditions and classic perception of hospitality.

Issues of dishonesty in society

In our society, it is not customary to behave inappropriately or deceitfully. Although I cannot claim that all people are like this, dishonest individuals are quite common. The most acute problems manifest particularly in the business sector. For example, even during the renovation of our salon, we encountered dealers who tried to take advantage of our temporary situation and set traps for us. Finding honest and reliable workers became a real challenge, and in the end, we partially had to do the work ourselves.

Public safety in Turkey

When it comes to public safety in the country, the widely held opinions that there is a high level of danger in Turkey need to be reconsidered. Of course, in large cities, there is always a risk of encountering pickpockets or other offenders, especially at night. Personally, my sister and I witnessed a tragic incident – a murder, which shocked me. Nevertheless, I feel that such events can happen in any country in the world. Overall, I feel relatively safe; nighttime walks around the city are perfectly fine, as it is almost always lively – shops and markets operate around the clock. Moreover, you can often see police officers on the streets who are genuinely engaged in maintaining order.

Cost of living in Istanbul

When it comes to life in Istanbul, it's quite enough for a comfortable existence here.1700 dollarsper month. One time, my friends and I calculated how much money is needed for a decent life, and we came to a figure of around10 thousand liraThis is a little over 100,000 rubles. This amount is relevant if you do not have your own housing. When renting an apartment, we are talking about a sum starting from2500 to 3000 liraApproximately 30,000 rubles. However, if you have your own housing, it is quite possible to live on that.7000 lira.

Transportation costs

It is also necessary to consider transportation costs. If you do not have a car and want to travel comfortably, be prepared for significant taxi expenses. Taxi prices are quite high, as the price of a liter of gasoline fluctuates around60–70 rublesHowever, public transport in Istanbul operates very efficiently, allowing you to avoid traffic jams and travel from one end of the city to the other at any time. Unlike trips in a personal car, which can take longer even during morning hours, the traffic situation here is significantly worse than in Moscow.

The level of medical care in Turkey

When it comes to medical care in Turkey, the level is quite high. I always turn to local specialists, confident in their qualifications and professionalism. In medical universities, there is no way to obtain a diploma without the necessary knowledge or to pay for exams. If a student fails even one exam, they will have to retake all previous ones, which ensures a high level of training for doctors. Moreover, the cost of medical services here is comparable to prices in St. Petersburg, and sometimes even lower. For example, I had a cosmetic procedure done here for just55 thousand rubles...while in Russia I would have paid more for a similar procedure.staMoreover, it is possible to purchase health insurance here, which significantly reduces the costs of prescription medications: instead of100You can only pay for the medicine with lira.30.

Conclusion

In conclusion, I can confidently say that my adventures in Istanbul are becoming increasingly exciting and multifaceted. Six years ago, I first arrived in this wonderful city, completely captivated by its atmosphere, history, and nature. Since then, Istanbul has not just become a place I periodically return to, but has transformed into a home where I strive to contribute something of my own.

While studying the Turkish language, I discovered not only the ability to communicate freely with the locals but also a new culture, the world of which turned out to be diverse and profound.

Our new business

Now, as my sister and I are launching our beauty salon business, every new challenge we face makes me feel more engaged and confident in my abilities. The process of handling the paperwork has been a real test for us, but we keep moving forward and celebrate every step towards our goal. Yes, things don't always go smoothly, and sometimes we have to rely on the help of friends and acquaintances, but it is precisely because of this that I have built strong connections and support here in Istanbul.

Overcoming difficulties

Right now, as I stand on the brink of starting my own business, I feel that this city is full of opportunities. Life here is vibrant, and the energy it fills me with inspires new ideas. I am confident that even the challenging moments will eventually become not just experiences, but also reasons to be proud of myself for overcoming them.

I am glad that I took a step towards my dream and am now actively building my future in a country that captivated me at first sight.
