How I decided to move to Spain: a story of adaptation and challenges

From that moment on, the prospect of moving became increasingly enticing, and I confidently concluded that my destiny was to exist in another country.

At one wonderful moment, I had a real opportunity to move to the United States. I was doing an internship at Boston State University as part of a specialist exchange program called Project Harmony. However, once I found myself in the midst of national life, I didn't feel the wave of inspiration I had dreamed of, and soon returned to my homeland, where my loved ones were waiting for me.

Career and travel in Moscow

In Moscow, I was building my career, raising a child, and actively traveling, but the dream of a new life continued to linger. Different options for a place where I could settle began to emerge in my thoughts, especially in European countries like Italy and Austria. Spain initially wasn't on my list of preferences, as I thought the standard of living there resembled more budget-friendly tourist destinations, like Turkey or Egypt.

Trip to Barcelona

Everything changed dramatically in 2012 when, inspired by my friends' stories, I decided to visit Barcelona with my daughter. At that moment, I realized that for many Russians, this city had become a kind of symbol of Spain. Upon arrival, I immediately recalled the Spanish I had studied at university and happily strolled along the famous La Rambla, exploring the narrow streets and alleys. That’s when I understood that I wanted to stay in this wonderful city forever. At first, I considered moving to Spain or Italy, but my level of Spanish became critically important—I had reached a B2-C1 level, which allowed me to communicate almost fluently.

My move wasn't a spontaneous decision—I didn't plan to suddenly cut all ties with Moscow. This process stretched over two years. During this time, I regularly traveled between the two countries, establishing business contacts and getting acquainted with a new cultural environment, carefully weighing all the pros and cons. Since I made this move at over forty years old, I already had many connections and achievements in Russia, and I understood that I couldn't just leave everything behind.

Financial independence

Additionally, I needed remote work and a financial cushion for a comfortable existence, as I was moving towards a new life in a country where I had neither relatives nor friends. During that time, I was working at a large media holding in Moscow as the chief manager of an advertising agency, and I didn't want to lose the professional heights and standard of living I had achieved.

Searching for remote work

Due to the fact that I was unable to find a job in Spain in my field and did not obtain a residence permit through work, I started looking for remote work. Getting a job in Spain and obtaining a residence permit with the right to work is not easy, especially if you do not have a high qualification and do not possess a blue card. Currently, there are many difficulties in the country with obtaining the necessary documents, which is related to the high level of unemployment, which, according to official data, reaches about 15%. Working as a journalist was not possible for me, and professions such as waitress or caregiver did not appeal to me.
