The story of Kirill and Olga

The story of Kirill and Olga is an impressive example of how to overcome obstacles on the way to a new life abroad. For many of us, the dream of moving abroad remains only a dream, as various legal complications and numerous doubts about what to do in a new country stand in the way. However, this couple found their solutions and have been enjoying life for two years in Sarafovo, which is not far from Burgas and conveniently located near the local airport.

Preparation for moving

This story is filled with fascinating moments that emphasize its uniqueness. Preparations for this important step have begun17 years ago. However, they were only able to realize these plans inin 2017. Thanks to the fact that they were a foreign company, Kirill and Olga were able to obtain a residence permit in Bulgaria. Not having their own legal entity, they decided to use the services of a broker, which made the process of their move much easier.

Difficulties in moving

Traveling as a family of five and a trailer was a great challenge: they had to cross in one week theeight boundaries. However, it was not without its difficulties: problems with the realtor made the process of searching for housing unpleasant. The apartment they chose turned out to be uncomfortable and cold. But afterfour monthsthey managed to cancel their contract and start looking for a new, more suitable place to live.

New business and life in Burgas

Today they run a small business - a pet beauty salon, which they call “candle factory”. The second year of their stay in Burgas brings them joy and satisfaction. Kirill recalls that the beginning of the road to a new life was long and difficult. Thoughts of a possible move began to torment him back in the27 years oldwhen he realized that adapting to a different culture and learning the language would become more difficult with each passing year. Nevertheless, after17 years oldof persistent waiting, the couple did realize their dream and moved in together.

Optimal country selection

Despite the possibility of immigrating to Israel because of their Jewish roots, Kirill and Olga were also considering other options. Germany, for example, was considered as a country for Jewish emigration, and they were interested in the Czech Republic because Olga was born in Prague. Their list also included such states as Turkey and Egypt, but in the end they came to the conclusion that Bulgaria was the best option.best choice. Preparing for the move took an entireyearDuring that time, they carefully researched legal options, searched for suitable housing, and worked on job prospects. Of course, the risk of return was considerable, but their confidence in their chosen path strengthened their spirits.

Advantages of living in Bulgaria

Speaking about the choice of Bulgaria, Kirill and Olga noted that going to Israel or Germany now would have been too difficult, as they would have had difficulties in adapting to the new culture. Meanwhile, the choice of Bulgaria turned out to be a very good one. Firstly, the warm and tender sea covenant stretches here, and for Kirill it has always been a dream to live close to a body of water. Secondly, Bulgaria is part of the European Union, which greatly simplifies the citizenship process in the future.

Conclusion

In Bulgaria it is not very difficult to find housing, develop a business and, most importantly, obtain a residence permit. They also found out that citizens who have reached the age of majority can apply for a residence permit as representatives of a foreign company registered in Bulgaria. Such opportunities significantly improved the quality of life for Kirill and Olga and allowed them to successfully settle in their new place.

Obtaining a visa and residence permit in Bulgaria

In accordance with the above, at the first stage you will need to obtain a D-type visa at the Consulate General of Bulgaria, which is located on the territory of the Russian Federation. After that, it is necessary to apply for a residence permit (VNL), which can be renewed annually for five years.

According to the first part of Article 24 of the Law on Foreign Nationals in Bulgaria, the reasons for obtaining a residence permit may be:

  • investments
  • business start-up
  • studies
  • family reunification
  • long-term medical treatment

Procedures for applying for a residence permit

In order to obtain a residence permit as a representative of a foreign company, you need to follow several steps. The first priority is to register the representative office with the Bulgarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry. All employees and their authorizations must be indicated. If it is not possible to register personally because you do not have your own legal entity, there are companies on the market that can help register you in an already operating representative office in Bulgaria.

Next, you will need to obtain a D-visa in your country of permanent residence. In this process, applying for and obtaining a D-visa is done in person only.

Obtaining residence permit status

Possession of residence permit status is one of the most important steps. After arrival in Bulgaria, it is necessary to submit all necessary documents to the Migration Service of the Ministry of Interior. All documents are also submitted personally by the applicant.

For more detailed information on visa conditions and the process of obtaining a residence permit in Bulgaria, you should consult specialized sources.

Immigration and investment information

If you are interested in aspects related to immigration, investing and real estate, it is recommended to subscribe to special channels in messengers such as Telegram. This will help you get up-to-date information and find trusted brokers.

Finding a broker

Even before I moved to Bulgaria, while in St. Petersburg, I was able to find a broker through the internet who had registered the representation of a Russian company with the Bulgarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Usually such brokers have Russian or Ukrainian citizenship and act as employees or company owners. Their main task is to formalize you as an employee of a company with a registered representative office.

The importance of the broker's work

The broker's job is to prepare and submit the documents required for legal relocation. Collecting a full set of documents is only possible if you cooperate with a real representative office of a foreign company. This confirms how important the services of professional brokers are. I can say from personal experience that without their help it would have been difficult for me to gather the necessary documents for each member of my family.

Issuance of D-type visa

After coordinating all the details with the broker, I received an e-mail with a package of documents to apply for a D-type visa. These documents were sent to the Consulate General of Bulgaria in Russia, and as a result we received a six-month D-type work visa. Anyone who receives such a visa is obliged to leave Russia within a month, and the remaining five months must be spent on applying for a residence permit in Bulgaria.

Arrival in Bulgaria

Upon arrival in the country, my broker provided invaluable assistance in preparing the necessary documents for submission to the local migration office, which allowed us to successfully complete the process of obtaining a residence permit. Undoubtedly, this support played a key role in my successful adaptation in my new country.

How did Kirill and Olga realize their dream of living in Bulgaria?

The search for a suitable broker succeeded only after six months of persistent efforts. This stage turned out to be quite challenging and required considerable effort on the internet, as many aspects were imposing their influence on our choice.

Documents for obtaining a residence permit

In order to obtain a residence permit (VNZh) in Bulgaria, we needed to collect and submit a number of mandatory documents. The key ones were:

  • Confirmation of employmentin the representative offices of Bulgarian companies;
  • Tenancy agreementwith the landlord;
  • Availability of cashin a bank account at a local bank.

The minimum amount to be held was €2500 (approximately BGN 5,500) for each adult and half of this amount for a child. It must be taken into account that the funds must be deposited in a Bulgarian banking institution.

Transition to permanent residence

After five years of annual renewal of the residence permit, we had the option to move on to permanent residence (permanent residence) for a similar five-year period. After that, the decision to extend the status or to apply for citizenship was up to us.

The services of a broker usually cost an average of €1000 per person. In addition, for five years we paid €250 each year to keep our seat in the representative office.

Legal aspects and risks

It is worth emphasizing that this method of obtaining a residence permit is completely legal, however, it should be noted that it involves certain risks. The fact is that there is no official contract with the broker, and everything is built on the basis of trust. Thus, there is no certainty that the company will act for all five years, which will allow us to extend our residence permit without interference.

Renewal will require submission of relevant documents, including a certificate from the BCCI. If the company closes down, the broker will be obliged to help find a new position in another organization, which, again, is not guaranteed. Therefore, when choosing a broker, it is extremely important to carefully check how long he has been working in the market and familiarize yourself with reviews of his activities. This is exactly what we did.

The role of a trusted broker

A reliable broker is able to keep track of all changes in the rules for obtaining a residence permit. It should be noted that the conditions for obtaining a residence permit on the basis of a representative office of a foreign company are constantly changing and becoming more and more strict. Previously it was possible to register up to 30 people through a representative office, but now this quota has been reduced to three.

In addition, special attention is paid to restrictions for Russian citizens: many of them are rejected already at the interview stage at the Bulgarian consulate in Russia. This issue is still unofficial, but, for example, citizens of Kazakhstan and Ukraine face such problems much less frequently and can apply for a “D” visa and residence permit without any difficulties.

Our luck

In this respect, we were luckier than others. We were able to obtain a “D” visa and a residence permit without any difficulties, which can be considered a real good fortune. My spouse and I arrived in Bulgaria with the status of two representatives, but as of today only one family member is applying for documents and is going to Bulgaria to apply for a residence permit.

This process has become much more complicated than in the past and requires special care at every step.

Moving to Bulgaria

Moving to Bulgaria was an important and significant step for our family. We, five people, which included our three daughters and several pets - an old Chihuahua, a bald cat and a tortoise, decided to leave our homeland behind and start a new page of life.

Preparation for moving

We loaded a minibus with a trailer with necessary things, such as dishes and clothes, as the volume of our luggage was very limited. Initially we planned to go through Estonia, but later we decided on the route through Finland, as the process of obtaining a Schengen visa at the consulate of this country turned out to be much easier.

Customs tests

At the stage of passing through customs in our country, we had to face the most challenging moments. We waited for five and a half hours, playing “tetris”, packing and unpacking during the detailed inspection. The border guards carefully searched for antiques, jewelry, rare books and works of art. We successfully overcame this stage and finally moved on to the Finnish customs, where everything went much easier.

Obtaining documents

After we received all the necessary documents, including the visa, our relatives who remained in Russia applied to the Bulgarian consulate for a visa on the basis of family reunification. More recently, we applied for an extension of our residence permit. Under the new regulations, I was registered as a co-representative of the company and my spouse as a family member, since she is here for family reunification.

Work and immigration issues

Although I found a job with a Russian company that has its own representative and offers a position as a sales representative, I have never actually worked a day in this position. I understand the specifics of the company and know my boss, but immigration authorities may ask questions about it. Although they are aware of the legality of this way of obtaining a residence permit, it is a fairly common practice among foreign workers.

Rights and obligations

It is important to take into account that according to my residence permit status, I cannot work in Bulgaria as a full-time employee and I am legally employed only in a representative office or in my company. Of course, there are “gray” schemes, but they may lead to the risk of deportation if detected.

Opening a business

At the moment, we have successfully opened our business in Bulgaria, which is similar in structure to a Russian LLC, providing the opportunity to engage in entrepreneurial activity. I work in a construction team specialized in the renovation of various objects - from electrical work to plumbing and complex engineering solutions.

Pet grooming salon

My spouse and I also decided to open a salon for pet grooming. My wife has acquired professional skills as a groomer and has considerable experience. We offer not only haircuts, but also pet photography and exclusive clothing for pets. In this way, we are gradually developing our own business, adapting to the needs and preferences of the local population.

Prospects

In fact, starting your own business in Bulgaria is a real opportunity if you choose the right direction for your business. The move turned out to be not only challenging, but also an inspiring step into a new life where new chances and prospects await us. We are confident that we will be able to organize our lives and succeed in the new land, relying on our own experience and knowledge, as well as opening new horizons for personal and professional growth.

Our adventure began with a pleasant ease at the border, where the document check took only a few minutes. Since we had all our pet papers in order, the Finnish border guards didn't even pay attention to them. One of the border guards could be seen to be pleasantly surprised that we were heading to Bulgaria.

After that a long transfer awaited us, during seven days we covered a distance of about 600-700 kilometers every day. We started our journey from Helsinki, then took a ferry to Tallinn and continued traveling through Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. This was followed by a stop in Poland, after which we visited Slovakia, Hungary, and eventually crossed the border into Romania.

Here we had a small problem: one of the border guards took our passports and disappeared into his booth. Ten minutes later, he came out and, to our surprise, happily exclaimed: “Hey, Russian!” and gave us back our documents with a stamp. But, to our regret, it turned out to be an exit stamp, not an entry stamp. Fortunately, the Bulgarian migration office was sympathetic to this misunderstanding and quickly resolved the issue without unnecessary checks.

General expenses

The total costs of our migration, including brokerage and consular fees, amounted to approx.1 million rubles.

Housing selection

Choosing an apartment turned out to be a real challenge, and we spent a long time discussing his homes in St. Petersburg. In the end, the choice fell on Burgas, as its proximity to the sea was one of the main factors:

  • Unlike Sofia, which is remote from the water and where life is also more expensive, working in the capital seems more affordable.

Since we were unable to obtain a tourist visa in advance and to eliminate all the necessary formalities for renting an apartment on our own, we turned to a broker. He drew up a rental agreement for an apartment that we did not physically live in, but at the same time we actively searched for housing options, researching many offers on the Internet.

We are no strangers to the vastness of Bulgaria, having visited the country before. In the end, having chosen a suitable option, we paid an advance payment - only150 euroswhich was not the last expense. When we arrived at the place we had to pay the full amount for a year's rent, not counting the deposits for two months, which we found out on the way. In the end, this was without the realtor's services.

Rental situation

The situation became clearer later: such practices as paying for a year in advance and a deposit for two months were unexpected. Undoubtedly, the landlord started blackmailing us because of the long term contract set at14 months. Realizing that we would not be able to leave the place quickly with our children, the landlord insisted on an additional payment for two months. Had it not been for the long and tedious journey, perhaps we would have refused such unacceptable conditions right away.

Our requirements for the apartment

Our requirements for the apartment were initially quite simple:

  • We were looking for a suitable place for five people to live, with the possibility of a permanent residence.
  • We also needed a garage to store our belongings and trailer.

This moment, unfortunately, was a real challenge - in Bulgaria apartments are often rented without additional storage space, but only with small closets for summer things.

Introductory remarks

Of course, if we had been able to understand all the nuances, we might never have chosen our first living space. It was a one-bedroom apartment with a combined kitchen and living room, located in an old four-story building. This building had two separate entrances and there was only one apartment on each floor. It was about a ten minute walk from the sea, but the apartment itself was quite cold.

Although the building had a central boiler room, we had to pay for heating separately, so in winter we had to use air conditioners as heaters, which obviously did not have the best effect on our comfort.

Relocation and new challenges

After four or five months of living in this apartment, we managed to terminate the lease and moved to another house in the same neighborhood in Sarafovo, just a bit further away from the first apartment. The process of terminating the lease was a real challenge for us, as it took us about two months to understand the local rules, administrative nuances and strategize!

I would advise you to look for accommodation locally and preferably to get the support of local acquaintances or friends who have lived in Bulgaria for a long time. Even if you choose an apartment in the summer season, it will be hard to know how comfortable and warm you will be in the winter. It was only after a year of living here that I was able to understand which houses in the neighborhood are really warm and which are not.

One of the nice things about this place is that many of the establishments are open year-round, unlike many other resorts. In addition, the bicycle path connecting the Burgas Marine Park with the Sarafovo Yacht Club provides an excellent opportunity for active pastime.

    First impressions

Our trip to this amazing city started in early November 2017. I distinctly remember that the temperature was 15 degrees, with rain pouring down like a bucket. When we left St. Petersburg, the temperature there was -3 degrees. We arrived in Burgas late in the evening and, very tired, went straight to bed. The next day we were scheduled to sign a rental agreement with a notary, as well as buy SIM cards and other necessary things.

    The adaptation process

Only on the third day we went to Varna in order to finalize all the formalities related to representation in the country. There we met with a broker and applied for a residence permit. We took our first walk by the sea only on the second evening, when we were still not too oriented on the terrain. We reached a rocky cliff, could hear the sound of the waves, but could not see the sea itself. After turning around, we headed back, but we were full of hope and positive energy.

    Language barrier

At first, the language barrier caused some difficulties, but we came to the country with some experience based on our knowledge of Russian. The Bulgarian consular officials were not surprised by our limited language skills, since we were moving on official business for a Russian company with funds and housing. A few days before our departure, I bought a phrasebook and a textbook of the Bulgarian language and started studying on my own. During my free hours at work, I socialized with Bulgarians, overheard their conversations, and memorized words and phrases.

    Advances in language

We now communicate fluently in Bulgarian, without any embarrassment or need to use a dictionary. Our middle daughter spent a whole season as an animator in a hotel on the sunny coast, which helped her to learn the language, enter college on a commercial basis and rent an apartment in Sofia. She is now continuing her studies and working in the capital, all of which was made possible by her drive and language skills.

    Adaptation to a new life

So far we have successfully adapted to our new life. We have learned the characteristic features of Bulgarian culture and managed to overcome the language barrier. Our children attend the local kindergarten and college, and we have made new acquaintances both with native Bulgarian speakers and Russian speakers. We started new businesses in various directions, which was a good step in our development.
