My spouse and I have always dreamed of the possibility of moving abroad, but until recently, we hadn't taken any steps in that direction. However, the situation has changed, and it's time to take action.

Country selection

Initially, we started exploring various countries, interested in both the visa-free entry periods and the living conditions there. In the end, we settled on Turkey and Georgia, and ultimately chose Georgia, as you can stay here for a whole year without a visa. Moreover, the office of the company where my husband works opened in Tbilisi, and he had the opportunity to transfer there.

Reasons for rejecting Turkey

Although we have a lot of acquaintances in Turkey, there was a limited period of stay and a long term stay would have required a residence permit. In fact, I would have been happy to stay living in Istanbul, as it is a city I am very fond of. However, my experience of staying in this city is limited to tourist visits only, and I realize that this could lead to some difficulties.

The beginning of the journey

Our adventures began with a flight from Russia to Turkey, where we tried to spend two weeks. When we received the news about my husband's transfer to a new office in Tbilisi, we decided it was time to buy tickets to Georgia. The whole process unfolded so quickly that we didn't have time to mentally prepare for the move.

  • We were just looking for available tickets, but they sold out quickly.
  • As a result, we bought the first available plane tickets, only paying attention to the fact that they were free.

We had all the necessary documents with us, but we soon found out that they would need to be certified and apostilled. In addition, we had to issue powers of attorney for our relatives who remained in Russia.

Issuance of a power of attorney

When we arrived in Tbilisi, I decided to contact the consulate at the Swiss embassy to arrange a power of attorney for my mom. This was necessary so that she could receive some documents on our behalf. The cost of the power of attorney was 30 dollars.

Unfortunately, there is no Russian embassy in Georgia, and all consular matters are handled through the Russian representation at the Swiss embassy. It is worth noting that the process turned out to be quite interesting, as we were not the only ones — there was a line in front of the consul, and everything was moving rather slowly. Nevertheless, fortunately, it all ended well.

Housing search

As for finding housing, the company my husband works for provided us with a paid apartment for three months. This way, we had a roof over our heads until the end of May. In June, we decided to take a month off in Batumi, and in July we returned to Tbilisi, staying in a hotel and starting our search for new housing.

At that time, the real estate market started to rise, prices dropped a bit, and there were more options available.

  • I reached out to a realtor, although I don't quite remember how I found her — maybe someone recommended her.
  • She showed us several options and we saw four apartments on the first day.
  • In the end, we chose one of them and signed the contract the next day.

Due to certain circumstances, our choice of housing was limited to just one area where we planned to move. We hope that this step will be successful, and in the future, we will be able to settle in the new country more comfortably and stably.

Recently, I found myself in need of housing since my daughter just started first grade. We actively searched for an apartment that would be close to her school. A great choice for us was a one-bedroom apartment with quality renovations and the necessary furniture. Essentially, we didn't have any other specific requirements.

Although the apartment is not located in the city center, it is in a modern building and, in my opinion, the price in the700 dollars a monthlooks quite justified. As for utility expenses and internet access (especially during the winter period), they amount to approximately300 larithat is equal to115 dollars..

Request for real estate among Russians

The question of purchasing real estate in Georgia is in demand among Russians seeking to live or invest abroad. Along with choosing housing, it is also important to pay attention to children's education.

In Tbilisi, there are schools with Russian-speaking classes, but as of April 2023, all the spots in them are already taken. With the increasing demand for education in Russian, it can be expected that in the coming years, there will be significantly fewer available places.

It is important to understand that successful immigration and the benefits of purchasing real estate in Georgia are closely linked to proper planning and the selection of properties. Housing prices in the country vary, and depending on the season, the demand for rentals can significantly increase.

Ultimately, purchasing real estate in Georgia not only opens up opportunities for comfortable living but also offers great prospects for business.

Overview of private educational institutions

As an alternative, we decided to consider private educational institutions where the instruction is conducted in Russian. Despite the limited time, I managed to find several such schools in our city. Together with my daughter, we visited these establishments and made our choice. Fortunately, there are no strict requirements for applicants and document collection, and the main condition is timely payment for tuition.

The annual cost is approximately6000 dollarsThe program includes both meals and a variety of additional activities such as dancing, drawing, and other creative pursuits. Classes do not exceed 12 students, creating a comfortable learning atmosphere. Currently, there is no homework or grading, as they are considered excessive for the early grades. Instruction is conducted exclusively in Russian, apart from mandatory courses in the Georgian language and the country's history. English and Georgian language studies begin in the first grade.

Social adaptation

The school educates not only children from Georgia but also from Ukraine, Belarus, and other countries. Our daughter's socialization went smoothly and quickly. The teachers use an individual approach for each child, which allows them to feel comfortable and communicate freely. Regular meetings are held for parents, which helps to create a friendly atmosphere.

Our life in Tbilisi

As for our life in Tbilisi, we quickly got used to this city. We managed to meet a lot of people who also moved to Georgia. We met some at our hotel and others during sightseeing tours. New acquaintances seemed to come naturally. There's no need to worry about how to find friends or a social circle – this is not a serious problem in Georgia today.

On the Internet, especially on social media, you can find a lot of information about various events:

  • literary clubs
  • meetings in bars
  • entertainment events

Relationships with the locals

We haven't established close relationships with the locals yet; we only communicate with the landlord of our apartment. I've noticed that he doesn't pay attention to the fact that we are Russian, and he has no biases regarding that. During our entire stay in Tbilisi, there have been no instances of aggression or negative attitudes towards me from those around us. People here are very friendly.

Some of my acquaintances who visited us noticed that the locals look a bit grim and serious. But in my opinion, that's just the first impression. As soon as you start talking to them, say a few words in Georgian, and show interest, they instantly open up.Georgian people are actually very friendly and responsive.

Medical services

When it comes to medical services, we prefer to use private clinics. All you need to do is call to make an appointment and show up, with no additional requirements other than payment. There are many health insurance options available in Georgia at reasonable prices, especially for children, which significantly helps reduce costs if a child is prone to frequent illnesses. This also applies to adults. My husband has insurance from his employer, so I don't know the exact expenses.

Cost of living

As for the cost of living in Tbilisi, it can be confidently said that it is at a decent level. We were here as tourists in 2017 and noticed that it was quite an affordable city back then. However, now some products in supermarkets cost about the same as in Moscow. This has been a noticeable change against the backdrop of the economic situation and the rising prices we are observing in our region.

There is a general feeling that the standard of living is gradually increasing, which also affects the prices of everyday goods.

Increase in housing prices

In recent years, housing prices have risen significantly and remain high. Although many everyday services may be less expensive, overall costs are quite comparable to those in Moscow. Seasonal products are mostly available and are of high quality.

The variety of prices in cafes

Prices in cafes can vary greatly: if you're looking to have a budget-friendly lunch, it's worth paying attention to places that are popular among the locals in Georgia. At the same time, restaurants offering European cuisine have completely different prices and will be significantly more expensive.

The economy of Georgia

It is important to consider thatsalaries in Georgiaare relatively low, which essentially contributes to the accessibility of basic products such as:

  • bread
  • kefir
  • matsoni
  • khinkali

Establishments with above-average prices are primarily aimed attourists and expatsSince the locals are not willing to spend 30 lari on breakfast, while foreigners with income from abroad can afford such expenses.

Public transport

As forpublic transportHe is quite accessible here, however, gasoline is more expensive in Georgia than in Russia. On average, the cost of a taxi in Tbilisi is around 150 rubles, and during peak hours, a trip across the entire city can cost a maximum of 500 rubles.

Comfortable buses run on established routes, and the metro is also operational, but during peak hours, you may encounter issues due to traffic jams and overcrowded public transport.

Cost of travel

The fare for any type of public transport is 1 lari, which is equivalent to about 25 rubles. Additionally, you have the option to change your mode of transport within one and a half hours without any extra charge.

Back in St. Petersburg, I couldn't imagine my life without a car, but here having a vehicle is not a necessity. A car is only needed for trips outside the city or for vacations, and it can be rented for about 30 dollars a day, without any extra fees.

Language question

As for the language issue, young people generally do not speak Russian, but their level of English is quite high, including among school students both in Tbilisi and in small mountain towns. In Russia, a similar situation is quite rare. The older generation usually speaks Russian fluently, which helps to avoid language barriers.

However, if you plan to get an official job, thenknowledge of the Georgian languageIt is definitely necessary. In Georgia, there are many courses for learning the language, and my husband and I even attended trial classes, although I find Georgian quite difficult to learn.

It's hard for me to imagine how one can fully master it: reading and writing are a real challenge, as the phonetic system is quite unique. I've only memorized a few phrases for communication in stores, and that's where my knowledge ends.

Banking services and residence permits

As for banking services and obtaining themresidence permitI opened a bank card shortly after moving in March by filling out an online application. The application process took no more than a week.

I had an interview and mentioned that I work as a freelancer; no additional documents proving my employment were required, so the process of getting the card went smoothly without any significant delays. My husband already had a job at that time, which eliminated any additional complications.

Moving as an opportunity for a new beginning

With every step we took towards a new stage in life, I increasingly realized that moving is not just a change of geography, but a real opportunity for a fresh start. My husband and I had been contemplating the idea of living abroad for a long time, but something always held us back: fear, uncertainty, lack of time. But when circumstances pushed us to take decisive action, we understood that this was exactly what we both wanted.

Tbilisi is our new home.

Tbilisi has become our new home and here we discovered many surprises and adventures. We enjoyed exploring the city, its beautiful streets and cultural features. Every day brought new impressions, and although there was not much ease in the moving process, it was a real challenge for us.

Difficulties as a way to strengthen the spirit

Life in a new place required us to adapt, but let's be honest: the challenges only made us stronger. Issues with paperwork, lack of information, and bureaucracy — all of this only tempered our spirit. I would even say that the experience we gained is immeasurably more valuable than any difficulties we faced. Dealing with documents at the consulate and searching for housing is also a kind of quest, as each challenge we overcome adds to our confidence in our own abilities.

New experiences and friendship

Certainly, we left behind many familiar things, but with each passing day, we found new friends and began to adapt to a new rhythm of life. I stumbled upon many lovely places for relaxation and entertainment, discovering everyday Georgia for myself: delicious cuisine, warm hospitality, and stunning nature. I am no longer afraid of change — on the contrary, it is now wrapped in an anticipation of something wonderful for me.

Adaptation for our child

I am glad that my child started school in a new city: it gives us the opportunity to integrate into society and also to say goodbye to language barriers and prejudices. And even though nostalgia for my homeland sometimes overwhelms me, I understand that we made the right choice.

Conclusion: changing life for the better

In conclusion, I want to say that moving abroad is not just a step into the unknown. It is a journey full of learning, adaptation, growth, and, of course, a new life. I am confident that this is just the beginning of our exciting story, and only positive changes await us ahead. Perhaps our experience will help some of you who are also facing a choice.Don't be afraid to change your lifeAfter all, sometimes it’s those very steps that make us truly happy.
