Manavgat on the Mediterranean coast of Turkey. Description and characterization.

It is located in the southwestern part of the Turkish Republic on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea. The town is dissected by a fast river with the same name, which, plunging into the sea, forms a beautiful bend. On all sides of the town is surrounded by dense pine forests, descending from the hills of the Taurus Mountains. Today Manavgat is considered one of the most famous diving centers in Turkey.

Manavgat has its own small airport that receives domestic flights. The nearby international airport in Antalya is 76 km away. The easiest way to get there from Antalya is by bus or dolmus.
Is it hot in Manavgat?
Manavgat is located in the Mediterranean climate belt, characterized by hot, dry summers and warm, rainy winters. However, the rocky landscape of the surrounding area smoothes out the climate a bit. As a result, summer temperatures here are a few degrees lower than in the lowland area. April is the beginning of the holiday season. At this time the water in the sea heats up to +21°C and the air to +25°C. The hottest months are July - August, with average temperatures of +28 - 30°C. At the end of August, the velvet season begins in Manavgat and lasts until the end of October.
A brief history of Manavgat.
History Compared to its nearby neighbors Antalya and Alanya, Manavgat is relatively young. It was built in 1329 by the Seljuk Turks. In those days it was called Melass, which from the language of the Etruscans translated as "temple of the Goddess". In the XV century the town is part of the Ottoman Empire. It becomes one of its administrative and economic centers. As a resort center it begins to improve intensively in the 80s of XX century.
What to see in Manavgat?
The Manavgat Waterfalls, formed by a river running down the rocky slopes, is considered the most famous attraction of the resort. The height of the waterfall here is small - only two meters - but its speed is extremely significant. The river, passing through the mountain paths, is soaked with minerals, eventually acquiring an unusual creamy-white color. You can admire the waterfall in one of the cafes and restaurants around it. On the Manavgat River there is another natural wonder - Oymapinar Reservoir. It is a beautiful reservoir surrounded by mountain steeps. Its depth is about 130 meters.
The ruins of the ancient village of Seleukeia are located 12 km from Manavgat. It was built in the IV century B.C. Because of its remoteness from other settlements, it suffered the least from robberies. Today you can see the remains of ancient Roman baths, temples, mausoleum and agora. If you aspire from Manavgat equally you can make a trip to another ancient town - Side. In the town itself you should certainly visit the mosque Manavgat Merkez Kulliye Cami. It is the most huge confessional building of the Antalya coast. It has four minarets and a beautiful ablution bath. This mosque was rebuilt in 2004.
Is there a beach in Manavgat?
Manavgat has pebble and sandy beaches. The most fashionable is the beach area called Incekum. In Turkish it means "fine sand". There are equally rocky beaches with clear water, attracting there connoisseurs of diving. Many of Manavgat's beaches have been awarded the "Blue Flag" for their cleanliness.
Manavgat offers endless possibilities for unconventional tourism. For example, you can go horseback riding, take a cruise on the Manavgat River or go rafting on it. In the plain between the Taurus Mountains, jeep and quad bike safaris are periodically organized. For fans of hiking there are entertaining paths through the mountainous surroundings and nearby pine forests. And cycling enthusiasts can ride along the sandy spit that separates the river from the sea. Every Monday there is a fair in Manavgat. There you can buy excellent knitted, leather and ceramic products for a symbolic price. You can also sample authentic Turkish tea and fruits.
