The beginning of my exciting immigration journeyIt's related to the idea of moving to Australia, specifically to a picturesque city like Sydney. Since I am involved in art, the option of obtaining a student visa seemed to be the most suitable and justified. However, to realize my intention, I needed to not only prepare the necessary documents but also secure a financial foundation for studying and living in another country. I realized the need to start saving money three years ago.

My own project, or rather, my online drawing school, helped me in this endeavor, as I could regularly allocate part of my income to my goals while also stabilizing my life after my divorce, taking care of my child. Despite my attachment to my homeland, I felt the suffocating influence of the local climate. The long winters, framed by cold, fog, and blizzards, were a real challenge for me. Therefore, the thought of moving to Australia seemed appealing — winters there are significantly more comfortable.

Other important factors

ClimateCertainly, it was not the only reason for my decision to leave Russia. In this context, it's worth mentioning other factors, such as the high standard of living and career opportunities in new circumstances. Additionally, having Australian citizenship would provide advantageous travel opportunities — many countries could be visited without needing a visa.

But fate had other plans. A year ago, I met my future husband, an Italian, and my plans for Sydney began to be replaced by dreams ofRome.

The climate inRome

When it comes to the climate ofRome, it can be noted that it is naturally similar to that of Sydney. In this city, winters are characterized by warmth, greenery, and sunny days. Average temperatures in January and February vary — around +5°C in cloudy weather, while in sunny conditions, they reach +10...+15°C and sometimes even up to +20°C. This is exactly the mild climate I have always wished for.

Visa nuances

As for visa nuances, the current information about visas for entering Italy requires clarification, as the international situation is constantly changing. I managed to obtain a Schengen visa for tourists for 30 days, which allowed me to legally enter Italy.

However, the process of obtaining a visa and then a residence permit turned out to be more complicated and lengthy than I expected. Italy is known for its leisurely pace of life, which also applies to bureaucracy. Unlike Russia, where there is a practice of quick document processing, everything in Italy moves more slowly. I had hoped to resolve my paperwork issues, including applying for a visa, within two to three months, but in reality, the process stretched out to almost a whole year.

Completion of the process

Fortunately, I have now reached the final stage of this process, and soon I will be granted residency. Looking back on this immigration journey makes me reflect on how unpredictable life can be: we plan one thing, and end up on a completely different path. I eagerly await the surprises that the future inRome will bring me, along with various opportunities and challenges.

Preparing for a move to Italy

If your goal is to move to Italy due to marriage to a citizen of that country, it's worth taking care of the relevant documents in advance while still in Russia. One of the most important documents isnull remainsA nulla osta is a certificate that confirms your legal ability to get married. I wasn't very familiar with this procedure and unexpectedly spent two months gathering and preparing the necessary documents. Fortunately, there are experts inRome who are ready to assist with such matters.

What is Nulla Osta?

Nulla osta is an official document issued by the sole immigration office located in the prefecture of Italy. If this act pertains to a marriage license, it is calledno impediment to marriageThis document serves as confirmation that there are no obstacles to starting a family.

Necessary documents for marriage registration

In order for the local administration to register your marriage application, you will definitely need:

  • foreign passport;
  • document "nulla osta";
  • Certificate of marital status from your country.

In my case, this meant that I needed to obtain such a certificate from the registry office in Russia. This certificate could only be obtained in person, without outsiders, which implied the need for a trip to my home country. However, alternative methods were found, thanks to an acquaintance inRome who established the necessary contacts in Moscow and successfully gathered the required information on my behalf. After that, the documents were submitted to the only visa center responsible for issuing the "nulla osta".

Tips for moving

If you are planning to move to Italy for other reasons, I recommend getting notarized translations of all your documents in advance. However, if your plan is related to marriage, you will only need a visa, a foreign passport, and a certificate from the registry office.

The first meeting with Italy

My acquaintance with Italy began only after I moved here, as I had never been here before. When I first set foot on Roman soil, everything around me felt completely unfamiliar. The contrast in mentality is remarkable. Although in some aspects, you can notice common traits. Italians demonstrate incredible work ethic, a sense of responsibility, and know how to organize their time. Family and children are considered the main values for them, while work takes a secondary position.

Family traditions

Sunday is considered a time for family gatherings and relaxation here. Italians love to spend these hours outdoors, with loved ones, or traveling. Therefore, it's best to do your shopping on Friday, as many stores remain closed on the weekends.

Finding a place that is open 24/7 in Italy is difficult: most restaurants are only open for a few hours a day, usually just for lunch or dinner. Interestingly, meal times are strictly regulated. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served at specific times. During lunch hours, from 1 PM to 4 PM, the streets of Italian cities become empty — everyone is rushing either home or to restaurants.

Sperlonga - a corner of tranquility

Sperlonga is a small town located betweenRome and Naples. This place has a unique charm and atmosphere, making it perfect for a secluded getaway.

Why did I choose to move to Rome instead of Sydney?

The sociability of Italians

Despite the common belief that Italians are exclusively open and sociable people, this statement does not always reflect reality. Their main characteristic iswarmth and hospitality...which creates a very favorable atmosphere for communication.

Italians are known for their habit of smiling and greeting those around them. If you happen to catch the gaze of a stranger on the street, they will most likely smile and say hello to you, even if you don't have any acquaintance with them.

Social connections in small and large cities

Residents of small towns are usually very close to each other: almost everyone knows all the important details about one another. In contrast, in large cities likeRome, the approach to life is quite different. Here, people are focused on their own affairs and personal matters, andrelationships between neighborsnot always that close.

Although in big cities there may be opportunities for close relationships, in general, everyone still lives their own life.

Traditions of Italy

Italy is famous forthe diversity of its traditionsEach of which is unique in its essence. Each holiday has its own set of customs and rituals.

  • For example, in Italy, gifts under the Christmas tree are opened on Christmas, which is celebrated on December 25, and the tree itself is usually set up by December 8.
  • In February, carnivals take place across the country, turning cities into real theatrical performances.
  • In addition, events are held in different cities.sagras- these are special holidays dedicated to certain traditions or products, as well as numerous cultural festivals that reflect the gastronomic palette of the country.

Language differences

Each region of Italy has its own characteristics – from cuisine and local customs tolanguage dialects...which can sometimes lead to misunderstandings. For example, the Romans may not understand the residents of Bari, as their accents and expressions differ. The Milanese accent is also significantly different and may resemble the accents of people from other countries.

Housing market

Speaking of housing, I have had no trouble finding or renting it, as my husband has aprivate apartment. However, I am aware of the prices in the real estate market.

To buy an apartment inRome, you will need 100,000 euros or more, but such apartments usually need renovation. As for rent, you should expect to pay 700 euros a month or more, while in the suburbs the prices for housing will be much lower. A cottage in the countryside can be purchased for as little as 40 thousand euros, and rent will cost about 400 euros per month.

Introduction

The final living expenses depend on your preferences and needs. Before making a decision to purchase real estate in Italy, it's important to study the specifics of this process, as it has many nuances.

Repairs and their complexities

When it comes to renovations, this is another challenging aspect that new homeowners face. The services of professional companies often come at a high price, and the contract amount can be quite substantial. For example, tiling in the bathroom or on the apartment floor can cost between 5,000 to 15,000 euros.

Therefore, many people choose to either do the repairs themselves or hire workers without official documentation, which, in turn, carries certain risks. If the work is done without official formalities, all responsibility for the quality falls on the client, and in case of problems, it will be difficult to seek justice through regulatory authorities.

Personal experience

I am Yana, and despite all the difficulties, I continue to pursue my creative activities. I closed my online school and now sell prints based on my artwork, which is inspired by the wonderful Italian architecture. In this article, I have attached a number of my works alongside photographs.

Work in Italy

As for internet access in Italy, there are no issues, which makes remote work possible. Finding offline work is also not difficult, especially in the restaurant industry, where there is a constant demand for the following professions:

  • Waiters
  • Cleaners
  • Kitchen helpers

Yes, although it doesn't require high qualifications and, accordingly, has relatively modest financial rewards, it will serve as a good starting point for your first experience.

Job search

If you have a high qualification, you won't have any difficulties finding an interesting job in Italy. In any country, there are employment opportunities if your specialty is in demand.

Opening a business

Regarding starting your own business, it's worth noting that in Italy, creating something large, like a limited liability company, can be quite challenging. However, the equivalent of sole proprietorship is relatively easy to implement. If you have experience in running a business, I see no reason not to go for it.

It's important to rememberIn Italy, there is no online accounting, so you will need a good guide in the form of an accountant. When starting a business, be sure to refer to official resources that will help you understand all the nuances of this field. Keep in mind that these websites are in Italian, so if you are not proficient in the language, it would be wise to use a translator.

Prices in Italy

The prices in Italy are quite reasonable, especially considering the quality of the products. For example:

  • A week's supply of food, including meat, will cost approximately 80 euros.
  • Fuel prices range from 1.8 to 2 euros per liter.
  • Gas costs about 0.7 euros per liter.
  • On average, the utility bill is about 100 euros per month.

In Italy, there is no usual process for collecting readings and receiving bills regularly. Statements for gas, water, and electricity arrive via email every two months. The garbage collection fee is charged twice a year: in January and June. The cost of internet is around 25 euros per month, while a phone plan will cost about 15 euros.

Expense summary

For a family of three with one child, an average of about 2500 euros per month is needed for a comfortable living.

Journey to a New Life

In conclusion to this story about my journey to a new life in Italy, I want to emphasize how incredibly important the experience of adapting to a completely different culture and mentality is. Moving toRome, although it was an unexpected twist of fate for me, turned out to be an amazing and exciting journey in its own right. I feel that here, among the historical landmarks and sunny atmosphere, I am not only discovering new horizons in my professional life but also learning to enjoy life all over again.

Italian culture

Italian culture, with its family traditions and respect for every moment, has filled my life with meaning. I admire how Italians know how to appreciate the time spent with loved ones, and they approach each meal with pride, turning it into a true art form. This philosophy of life inspires me; it reminds me of the importance of not rushing and being able to enjoy every moment.

Climate and a New Beginning

The climate I have always dreamed of has become more than just comfort. It has become a symbol of my new beginning. The Italian winter, soft and sunny, brings me joy, while the bright sea and endless horizons fill the moments when I sometimes miss my homeland.

Difficulties and lessons

I can't forget the difficulties I faced during the process of getting the paperwork and marriage sorted out. It was a long and complicated process, but it taught me patience and perseverance. I realized that on this journey, it's important not only to reach the goal but also to enjoy the path you've traveled.

New opportunities

Now, as I stand on the brink of obtaining a residence permit in this amazing country, I feel a deep sense of gratitude for all the opportunities that are opening up before me. I realize that every turning point, every decision has led me to where I am now, and this is not just a new country — it is a new home.

Expectations and dreams

Right now, my life is filled with hope and anticipation. I am ready for the new challenges and discoveries that await me in Italy. I can't wait to get to know this country better, make new connections, and turn my dreams into reality. The outcome of my journey is not just a move, but a transformation within myself, an opportunity to start a new chapter in my life, and I am very happy about it.
