Ulm and Neu-Ulm: two cities on the banks of the Danube
  • The historic center of Ulm: a picturesque piece of German history
  • Climb to the main tower of the cathedral in Ulm and feel the adrenaline!

The historic center of Ulm

The historic center of Ulm presents a classic landscape from a German history textbook, a combination of architectural masterpieces from the Middle Ages. The facades of the half-timbered houses here are in excellent condition, with dates of their construction indicated - 1641, 1587, 1618. There are not many residential buildings; most of the structures are administrative or hotel establishments.

Streets and parking

The streets are paved and accessible for vehicle traffic. However, it is not common for visitors to drive here in their own cars. It is best to use the underground parking, which is functional: you enter from one side of the street and exit from the other side directly into the flow of traffic. The exit from the parking leads straight to the city center: to the right are the old quarters; to the left are the shopping streets and the cathedral.

Rivers and atmosphere

Ulma is given a special atmosphere by two rivers: the Danube and the Blau. The Danube's waterfront is equipped with bike paths, picnic lawns, and remnants of the old diversion wall. The Blau River may be small in size, but it creates a Venetian atmosphere as it flows past the very first houses of the area all the way to the end of its center. The locals love their city, filling it with cafes, small restaurants, and shops, actively participating in the life of the area, even though Ulma is not on the list of top tourist attractions.

One of the most unique places to visit is the cathedral in Ulm. This cathedral is not only the tallest in Ulm, Germany, but also in the entire world, which makes it truly unique. The height of the cathedral is 169 meters, and these are not just numbers on paper - you can actually climb almost to the very top of this majestic structure.

Inside the cathedral, you will encounter more tourists than local residents of Ulm, who have known all the challenges of climbing the main tower since childhood. There are no elevators here, and the 750 steps present a serious challenge even for the most determined lovers of beauty.

I personally climbed this tower and, to be honest, as someone who isn't a big fan of heights, I was almost scared. I saw other "victims" too - they seemed to be Italians and Japanese.

Instead of greeting, they mostly shook their heads in dismay.

Nevertheless, the view from the observation deck makes all the difficulties of the climb worthwhile. The panoramic views of the streets of Ulm and the surrounding fields are breathtaking. Here, you can take in every rooftop of the city and spend time enriching both your soul and your camera.

Don't miss the chance to feel the adrenaline while climbing this amazing tower!!

Ulm and Neu-Ulm: two cities on the banks of the Danube

Ulm – a city in Germany that is being studied.

I'm finishing a series of materials about the cities of Germany, and I would like to share my impressions of Ulm. It's one of those cities that can become a home for a newcomer or an immigrant.

The historic center of Ulm

The historic center of the city, filled with half-timbered houses and cobblestone streets, creates an atmosphere of the Middle Ages. However, the true romance of Ulm comes from its two rivers – the Danube and the Blau. Despite this, most tourists tend to overlook Ulm in favor of more popular destinations.

Life in Ulm

The residents of Ulm love their city and fill it with charming cafes and restaurants every day. The cathedral, which is the tallest in the world, delights lovers of beauty. At the same time, Neu-Ulm is not as beautiful, especially in comparison to its neighbor. However, if you want to live in this area, then Neu-Ulm might be just what you need.

Housing prices in Ulm

The price of housing in Ulm is quite high, with the average price for an apartment ranging from 3,000 to 3,500 euros per square meter, and in new buildings exceeding 5,000 euros, while in the best new developments and along the Danube, it can reach 8,000 to 10,000 euros. However, even in light of this, Neu-Ulm could be an alternative for those looking for more affordable housing.

A trip to Ulm

Overall, Ulm is a small but interesting city that is pleasant to live in. If you decide to go there and get to know the place better, be sure to visit the city wall, enjoy the magnificent panoramic view of the Danube, and definitely check out the tallest cathedral. You won't regret it!!
