141 million land border crossings in Cyprus over 20 years.
According to data obtained by TAK correspondent from the police press office, the number of border crossings in the early years ranged from 4 to 6 million per year, but it rose to 13 million before the pandemic in 2019.
In the period of border crossing restrictions in 2020-2021 due to the pandemic, the total number of border crossings fell back to 3 to 4 million, but last year it was back up to 13 million.
Free movement through three of the nine gates opened today, including Ledra Palace in the capital Lefkosh, Beyarmuda and the two and a half mile border in Magus, began on April 23, 2003.
The opening of the first three gates for passage with the presentation of an ID card or passport 20 years ago is considered a historic milestone on the island.
One year after settlement plans named after UN Secretary General Kofi Annan were considered, the Annan Plan was submitted to a referendum by two peoples.
In the referendum, about 65% of Cyproturks voted in favor and about 76% of Greek Cypriots voted against.
When analyzing the change in border crossings in Cyprus by citizenship, it can be seen that in the early years the passings of Cyproturks were much higher than those of Greek Cypriots and citizens of other countries, but in recent years the situation has changed and the Greek Cypriot passings are about 43% of the total number of passings.
