20 increase in the number of households renting over the last decade

In Spain, renting continues to win market share over owning. The number of families living in rented accommodation rose by 19.25% between 2011 and 2021, reaching 16.5%, according to the latest census published by the National Institute of Statistics (INE).

Over the past 20 years, rental housing has grown by 41%. These percentages are significantly lower than in most European Union countries.

According to Eurostat, in 2021, more than 50% of households in Germany lived in rented accommodation. High percentages are also seen in Austria (45.8%), Denmark (40.8%), France (35.3%) and Sweden (31.1%). Spain has similar figures to Bulgaria (15.1%) and Latvia (16.8%), ranking seventh with the lowest percentage of families renting.
