Michael Barrett may be the first. The Chicago resident spent much of last year, during quarantine, salivating over homes for sale in Italy. But instead of limiting his drooling to the area, he and his wife, Aida, went ahead and bought a house without ever seeing it. And, he says, buying property remotely made a lot more sense than what many non-residents of Italy do - come on vacation, fall in love, visit a few places and make an offer. In fact, in his opinion, it''nomads are not the best option'.

They wanted to buy some time before retirement so their dream home would be ready to move into on day one. They started looking for places that met their requirements. Very specific requirements. "It had to be within a two-hour drive of a large city with advanced medical care and a major international airport," says Barrett, who says they were looking for something "cheap and cheerful," not the luxury properties that American immigrants in Europe often seek.
