Amsterdam increases tourist tax

In Amsterdam, a significant increase in the tourist accommodation tax is planned for 2024. As a result, it will rise from 22 euros per night, making it the most expensive tax in Europe and the fourth highest in the world.

Let's figure out what the residence tax is, what it's for, and how it works in Italy.

How much will the accommodation tax in Amsterdam increase? The increase in the accommodation tax in Amsterdam is planned for next year. The accommodation tax currently exists in all countries around the world and is the amount of money that a tourist must pay for each night of stay in the place or city where they are staying. It is expected that the accommodation tax in Amsterdam will increase by approximately 7-12.5%, and the final cost will depend on the price of the room in the chosen hotel. For example, for a room costing 175 euros per night, a tourist will pay an average of 22 euros per night, instead of the current 15 euros.

Reasons for the increase

This decision was made to combat the phenomenon of tourist overpopulation. In fact, in addition to the additional revenue for the city, estimated at 65 million euros, which will be used to pay for local services, the motivation for increasing the contribution from tourists was to counteract the negative effects of overtourism.

Tourist tax: how does it work in Italy

In Italy, there is also a tourist tax for those who use hotel or non-hotel accommodation. The tax amounts vary from city to city and are determined by municipal administrators. The introduction and regulation of the tourist tax was carried out by Federal Law No. 23 of March 14, 2011, Article 4 "Regulations on the Municipal Fiscal Federation." Not all cities can impose a tourist tax: only provincial capitals and cities included in regional lists of tourist destinations or cities of art can adopt and implement it. As for the amount, with some exceptions, such as inRome where it can reach 10 euros, regulations state that the tax cannot exceed 5 euros per night: it is set within a range of 1 to 5 euros depending on the type of accommodation and hotel star rating. All individuals staying in accommodations in cities where the tax is in effect are required to pay it, with some exceptions for certain categories of people, such as children, the sick, the disabled, their companions, and local residents. The revenue from this tax must be invested by municipal administrations solely in the tourism sector, for the maintenance and restoration of cultural or natural assets, for improving local public services, or for supporting hotel facilities and tourist events.
