Billecart-Salmon invests in the Loire estate

Jérôme Bretodeau is known as the driving force behind the Muscadet revival thanks to his pioneering work with the previously despised Melon de Bourgogne grape. He founded his winery Domaine de Bellevue in the commune of Gétigny in the westernmost region of the Loire Valley after purchasing a small 4-hectare plot in 2001. The region was dominated by cooperatives focused on low-cost industrial Muscadet production, but Bretodeau chose a different path for his ownership, focusing on organic and biodynamic production and paving a modern path for Muscadet through creative winemaking and bold experimentation. The winery has gradually expanded over time and now cultivates 20 hectares of red and white grape varieties. Domaine de Bellevue does not buy grapes from outside growers. In addition to Melon de Bourgogne, Bretodeau also grows Savagnin, Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc and Pinot Noir. This has resulted in eccentric cuvées, many of which defy categorization, along with distinctive old-vine Muscadet.

"I am excited to begin a new chapter for the winery with Maison Billecart-Salmon," said Bretodeau. "This will be a great support to ensure the long-term success of our business and our teams. Together, we will reach new heights in creating even more exceptional wines."

Mathieu Roland-Bilcar, CEO and seventh-generation family member at Champagne house Billecart-Salmon, met Bretodeau in 2018. Bretodeau has spent the past five years advising Champagne House Billecart-Salmon on its biodynamic winemaking work. The family-owned Champagne house, known for its flagship Brut Rosé Champagne, is looking to increase distribution of Bretodeau's wines in France and abroad.

"The house is thrilled to team up with highly skilled winemaker Jérôme Bretodeau," said Roland-Bilcar. "We firmly believe that the terroirs of Muscadet and the western Loire region have yet to receive the reputation they rightfully deserve, and we intend to support him in his future projects."
