Burj Al Babas: The Ghost Town of Disney Palaces in Turkey

A few kilometers south of the Turkish town of Mudurnu lies an incredible sight. Here, there is an entire town made up of hundreds of mini-palaces in Disney style, complete with towers and luxurious turrets. But not a single person or even a road is in sight. This place is calledBurj Al BabasIt is a ghost town made up of semi-finished mini-castles inspired by French châteaux. Currently, there are almost 600 palaces here, although it was originally planned for there to be more than 700.

But why are all these palaces just standing here, completely empty? Originally, Burj Al Babas was a luxury real estate project. Construction began in 2014, but was soon halted due to complaints from conservationists and environmentalists, and the company responsible for the project became burdened with debt and went bankrupt. The pandemic seems to have been the final nail in the coffin for the project. The idea was to create hundreds of palaces and sell them, each with its own pool, jacuzzi, and underfloor heating.

The town was also supposed to be equipped with its own shopping center, restaurants, spas, Turkish baths, and a golf course. Each cottage could cost up to £440,000 ($542,000). Currently, all the palaces of Burj Al Babas remain unfinished, and the town is completely neglected - there are even no roads here.

As you can see, not only are the palaces empty, but they also look quite ugly. Even if they had been completed, one can imagine that the town would have looked exceptionally strange and out of place in the surrounding landscapes of the Bolu province. Due to funding issues, environmental preservation, and the pandemic, it is highly unlikely that work on Burj Al Babas will ever resume. It will probably remain a strange ghost town for many years, and this is certainly not the only odd abandoned town in Europe. Have you ever heard ofKrakoIncredible abandoned "ghost village" in Italy?
