Dubai plans to relocate its international airport for $35 billion over the next 10 years.

Dubai International Airport, the busiest international airport in the world, will move its operations to the second largest airfield in the city-state, located in the southern desert area, "within the next 10 years" as part of a project costing nearly $35 billion, its government announced on Sunday.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum's announcement marked the final stage in the recovery of his long-haul carrier Emirates after the coronavirus pandemic disrupted international travel. Plans to move operations from DXB airport to Al Maktoum International Airport at Dubai World Central were also postponed due to the repercussions of the emirate's economic crisis in 2009.

Future Expansion Plans

"We are building a new project for future generations, ensuring continuous and sustainable development for our children and their children in turn," Sheikh Mohammed said in an online statement. "Dubai will become the world's airport, its port, its urban center and its new global hub."

Airport Features

The announcement included images of a computer-modeled, bending white terminal that resembles traditional Bedouin tents of the Arabian Peninsula. According to the statement, the airport will feature five parallel runways and 400 gates for aircraft.

Currently, the airport has only two runways, just like Dubai International Airport.

Impact on Aviation Industry

The financial health of Emirates airline has served as a barometer for the aviation industry around the world and the broad economic health of this city-state. Last year, the number of passengers passing through DXB grew beyond the 2019 total to 86.9 million passengers.

Challenges and Growth

However, as the number of passengers increases, the constraints at DXB are once again putting pressure on the area, as the airport is surrounded on all sides by residential neighborhoods and two major highways. Al Maktoum International Airport, located 45 kilometers (28 miles) from DXB, opened in 2010 with one terminal.

  • Zones for expansion and growth

  • Financial challenges during economic crises

  • Tourism numbers and hotel occupancy rates

Sheikh Mohammed's announcement pointed to plans for Dubai to expand even further south. The nearby Expo 2020 is already offering homes for buyers.
