The President of Northern Cyprus, Ersin Tatar, visited the city at the invitation of the mayor of Giresun, Aytekin Şenlikoğlu. During his visit, Tatar first went to the Giresun Fortress, where archaeologist and scholar Gazanfer İltar from Giresun University told him about the history of Giresun.

Then Tatar visited the Giresun governorship and participated in the conference "The Strategic Importance of Northern Cyprus in the Turkic World," organized by Giresun University.
