Rich residents from other states have been moving to Florida en masse for five years, driving up real estate prices and reshaping the housing market.

While many Florida property owners are profiting from rising home values, an unintended consequence is that locals find the state unacceptably expensive. Many are considering moving to neighboring states where the cost of living is lower, the pace of life is slower, and family in Florida can be reached in a weekend, as Palm Beach and Jupiter real estate consultant Holly Meyer Lucas told Insider.

Meyer Lucas said Florida property owners were happy to make million-dollar profits by selling their homes to wealthy families from New York and California. But now people are leaving "the state along with teachers, police officers and firefighters," Meyer Lucas says. "They're moving to the Carolinas, Alabama, Georgia.

Some who considered moving back to Florida found they couldn't afford to live here. "The problem is that if they want to move back to our neighborhood, their $800-a-month mortgage is no longer an option," she says. "To rent the same type of housing, they have to pay almost $4,000 a month. "

Data from Realtor.com shows that Florida residents are most interested in homes in Georgia, as well as other neighboring southern states. However, they are also looking north to New York and west to Texas.
