60 Minutes interview on Tina Turner's death goes viral: I deserve more - with Mike Wallace at her home in France

Music icon Tina Turner has died at the age of 83 after a long illness. In tribute to the tenacious "queen of rock 'n' roll," fans have begun sharing a clip from a 1997 interview she did with Mike Wallace for CBS News' "60 Minutes" program.

In the interview, Turner walks Wallace around her estate in the south of France. She had been living in Europe for over a decade. Looking around the huge estate with breathtaking views, Wallace asks Turner, "Do you feel like you deserve all of this?" "I deserve more than that," Turner laughs.

This exchange of phrases has gone viral - 25 years after she confidently affirmed her self-esteem. At the time, it was expected to earn $100 million during a three-month European tour. Wallace says he had no idea Turner was such a big star in Europe. "Nobody in America knows that," Turner replies.

When Wallace asks how "American" she is, Turner, who grew up in rural Tennessee, says, "Still very American. I still don't speak any foreign languages here. I still pay taxes in America. I have real estate in America. All my businesses still operate out of America," she says.

"But in my heart? I don't think I'm coming home. "

In her retirement, Turner had settled in Zurich, Switzerland, and was there when she died this week, her spokesman said. During a 1997 interview, Turner showed Wallace other elements of her luxurious life - a customized Lamborghini and a private jet used for touring, as well as her Buddhist altar.

Turner, who was born into a Baptist family, says she turned to Buddhism to help her cope with difficult times. The eight-time Grammy Award winner had a musical career spanning decades, beginning when she was discovered by Ike Turner, whom she married and who physically abused her.

The relationship and abuse was depicted in detail in her autobiography "I, Tina" and in the 1993 movie "Where Love Begins," starring Angela Bassett. Turner said she didn't regret that the movie made her relationship problems public, but she did regret that "it wasn't pretty to me and people found out about it." "I'm constantly reminded of that. It's been almost 20 years and Ike has been married twice since then," she said in an interview.

She also said she underwent surgery after her face was "smashed in" and she had sinus problems due to a damaged nose from the abuse. Ike Turner died in 2007. During the interview, Turner also introduced Wallace to her longtime partner, music producer Erwin Bach. Turner said they didn't think they should get married at the time. The couple finally married in 2013 after 27 years together and remained together until her death.
