** The husband of the Massachusetts woman who disappeared on January1st suspected that she was seeing another man, and convinced his mother to hire a private detective to prove it, according to court documents published on Thursday.

Walsh, 47, is charged with first-degree murder, as well as misleading the police/sabotaging the investigation and improper disposal of a body. In the state of Massachusetts, first-degree murder carries a mandatory life sentence without the possibility of parole.

Walsh is accused of murdering Ana Walsh, dismembering her body, and disposing of it. He pleaded not guilty on Thursday in Norfolk County Court. The judge decided that he should be held without bail.

Ana Walsh, a 39-year-old mother of three from Serbia, was last seen early on January 1 after having New Year's dinner at her home in Massachusetts with her husband and a family friend, prosecutors say.

Brian Walsh said that she was called back to Washington on January 1 due to a work emergency. He did not contact her employer until January 4, stating that she was missing. The company that first reported Ana Walsh's disappearance to the police claimed that there was no emergency, prosecutors say.

She spent time both in Washington, where she worked for an international real estate management company, and at her family home in the prestigious coastal town of Cohasset, 15 miles (24 kilometers) southeast of Boston.

Walsh was under house arrest with some exceptions while awaiting sentencing in a fraud case related to the sale of counterfeit Andy Warhol paintings, according to federal court records.

Ana Walsh met with a friend in Washington on December 28 and became "extraordinarily emotional and extremely upset," prosecutors say.

“Ana believed that Mr.

Walsh would be incarcerated due to his unresolved criminal case. Ana told her friend that she plans to move to Washington with her three children and is ready to leave Mr. Walsh,” the document states.

Brian Walsh's attorney, Tracy Miner, stated on Thursday that a person is not considered dead for seven years "because it's easy to disappear if one wants to." She mentioned that the body has not been found, there are no indications of how she died, and there is no evidence regarding the cause or the murder weapon.

The miner said that Brian Walsh's mother really hired a private detective, but she said that his mother was "crazy."

“Ana is a good girl, but please, go on. You will be proven wrong,” he told her, according to Miner. “The detective never found any evidence of an affair because they actually didn’t have time to start anything before Ana disappeared.”

She said that during dinner on New Year's, the couple and a friend drank champagne and signed the box that contained the bottle, saying that 2023 would be their best year.

The miner said that he waited three days to call Ana's employer, following a pattern that started on Thanksgiving when she would disappear for several days and couldn't be reached.

Prosecutors stated that starting from January 1 and for several days, Brian Walsh conducted multiple online searches using his child's iPad on topics such as "dismemberment and the best ways to dispose of a body," "how long a body takes to start smelling," and "saw the best tool for dismemberment."

The miner said that there were other search queries as well, such as "how to create a charity organization for tax-free transfer of large lottery winnings" and the best places for family vacations in 2023.

Investigators stated that they discovered surveillance footage from January 3, showing a man resembling Brian Walsh throwing what appeared to be heavy garbage bags into a dumpster on the grounds of an apartment complex in Abington, near Cohasset.

During a search of a waste processing facility located near the home of Brian Walsh's mother on January 8, garbage bags were found containing an axe, a saw, towels, and a Tyvek suit, cleaning supplies, a Prada bag, shoes similar to those worn by Ana Walsh at the time of her disappearance, and a COVID-19 vaccination card with her name, authorities reported.

Prosecutors also stated that Ana Walsh took out an insurance policy worth $2.7 million, with her husband listed as the sole beneficiary. Miner said that Brian Walsh does not need the money. She mentioned that his mother, a wealthy woman, gave the couple "tens of thousands of dollars."
