Cryptocurrency -2nd most popular in France: survey.

The survey was conducted at the request of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) in the spring of 2023. Cryptocurrencies have become the second most popular type of investment asset among the adult population of France, according to a survey conducted by the OECD and published by France's main financial regulator - the Financial Markets Authority on November 13. According to the survey, 9.4% of the French population owns crypto assets, which is slightly less than the share of owners of the most popular type of investment asset - real estate funds (10.7%). An additional 2.8% of respondents own non-fungible tokens.

The survey also highlighted a group of "new investors" who started investing for the first time since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020. These new investors are primarily men (64%) and are significantly younger than traditional investors, with an average age of 36 compared to 51 for the latter.

The authors of the survey also noted that new private investors have a "relatively low level of financial knowledge," especially among the youngest group aged 18-24. They were more likely to give incorrect answers to basic questions about investment strategies compared to traditional investors.

The survey was conducted among 1,056 respondents in the spring of 2023, and 40 in-depth interviews were also carried out to understand their needs and motivations.

France is actively pursuing a leadership role in Europe in the digital economy and innovations. In September, the local telecommunications group Iliad announced an investment of 100 million euros ($106 million) to fund the creation of a "center of excellence" dedicated to artificial intelligence research in Paris. This month, the first institute of its kind for crypto-assets opened in the business district just outside of Paris.
